How about Great Illustrated Classics: Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley? This is the original story of a monster created from dead bodies. Both the scientist and the creature suffer a lot but there is an illustration on practically every page. I don't know if this action would be offensive to some groups.

How about The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency, by Alexander McCall Smith? The story concerns a woman in an African country who opens the first agency ever operated by a woman. There are no guns or murderers in this novel and some of the chapters can be skipped if it seems too long.

Another book is A Long Way from Chicago, by Richard Peck. This is the story of a brother and sister from Chicago who spend a week every summer visiting their grandmother, who lives in a small country town during the Depression. Grandmother is not very traditional and the story is very funny.
