Title: International Research Meeting for Junior Applied Linguistics
Body: From http://www.anela.nl/juniorresearchmeeting/index.php International Research Meeting for Junior Applied Linguists January 24-26, 2007 University of Groningen, the Netherlands For more than 10 years, Anéla, the Dutch affiliate of AILA, has been organizing the so called ‘junior days’ at which beginning researchers, PhD students, and graduate students are invited to present their work in an informal and supportive setting. Title: Recommended Site for FLT Resources
Body: Have you seen the site http://www.getmetalking.com ? This site is great for foreign language teachers. The person who put this together is a retired German and Spanish teacher, I believe. She has an interesting concept in that you pay for a year's subscription and can download as many flashcard sets as you need. Plus you can print off as many sets as your need for your class for the same price. For flashcards, this is a better deal than places like Teacher's Discovery where you have to pay per set. The flashcards are arranged by themes, and the pictures on them are good. I bought and downloaded a set of classroom signs. The download was easy. Each set has 20 expressions, with wonderful clip art. I printed them out at school on the color laser printer and they look beautiful. I haven't decided if I want to just put one up a week as a target phrase of the week or if I want to hang several of them at once. One of the things I really found convenient with these signs, is that I can print each sign individually. Baird, J. [AATG-L] Great flashcard Web site. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Day of the Dead Service Learning Project Ideas
Body: We did a service learning project for Dia de los Muertos, in which we had a celebration in our library, and invited parents, school board members and administration, and people in the community. I divided the class into groups. Each group had their own project (or two), and they also had one project that was the same: the ofrenda. We had an "authentic as possible" ofrenda which the whole class helped put together (dedicated to Selena-students' choice). We displayed this in the library. Each group also made a type of "mini ofrenda" with shoe boxes. Each group choose someone who had died, and they decorated their shoe box with items/pictures. They didn't use just pictures, but put objects inside.. It looked like a little display. As a class we also made papel picado to decorate the library. Each group had a role in our celebration. Some made souvenirs to give to everyone (tissue paper marigolds, sugar skulls, etc.). Each group had to research and create a presentation on their topic: events that take place, history of the holiday, symbols of the holiday, the ofrenda, etc. We took information from all the groups and put together a PowerPoint presentation to show everyone. One by one, each group came up to explain what they had learned, and they also explained their own ofrenda. One group also had to make "before and after" surveys. They tested what the attendants knew before and after our celebration. Each group also made an authentic dish, and we did a buffet-style "try a bit of everything." We had door prizes (sombreros, boleros, dia de muertos candy, etc). Each student made a few invitations (Spanish and English) which they gave to parents, people in the community, etc., so that we could get an RSVP count. Check out www.teachersdiscovery.com if you're not already aware of the site. They have a whole section of things for Dia de los Muertos, including an ofrenda kit for the classroom, and sugar skull molds. Kasic, A.J. Dia de los Muertos and Service Learning.
