TitleDay of the Dead Service Learning Project Ideas
Body
We did a service learning project for Dia de los Muertos, in which we had a celebration in our library, and invited parents, school board members and administration, and people in the community.

I divided the class into groups. Each group had their own project (or two), and they also had one project that was the same: the ofrenda. We had an "authentic as possible" ofrenda which the whole class helped put together (dedicated to Selena-students' choice). We displayed this in the library. Each group also made a type of "mini ofrenda" with shoe boxes. Each group choose someone who had died, and they decorated their shoe box with items/pictures. They didn't use just pictures, but put objects inside.. It looked like a little display. As a class we also made papel picado to decorate the library.

Each group had a role in our celebration. Some made souvenirs to give to everyone (tissue paper marigolds, sugar skulls, etc.). Each group had to research and create a presentation on their topic: events that take place, history of the holiday, symbols of the holiday, the ofrenda, etc. We took information from all the groups and put together a PowerPoint presentation to show everyone. One by one, each group came up to explain what they had learned, and they also explained their own ofrenda.

One group also had to make "before and after" surveys. They tested what the attendants knew before and after our celebration.

Each group also made an authentic dish, and we did a buffet-style "try a bit of everything."

We had door prizes (sombreros, boleros, dia de muertos candy, etc).

Each student made a few invitations (Spanish and English) which they gave to parents, people in the community, etc., so that we could get an RSVP count.

Check out www.teachersdiscovery.com if you're not already aware of the site. They have a whole section of things for Dia de los Muertos, including an ofrenda kit for the classroom, and sugar skull molds.
