Title: Secretary Spellings Announces Final Limited English Proficiency Regulations
Body: From http://www.ed.gov/news/pressreleases/2006/09/09132006a.html September 13, 2006 Today, U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings announced final regulations for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students. The new Title I Regulation is intended to help recently arrived Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students learn English and other subjects while giving states and local school districts greater flexibility on assessment while continuing to hold them accountable under No Child Left Behind. "Our schools must be prepared to measure what English language learners know and to teach them effectively, with proven instructional methods," said Secretary Spellings. "No Child Left Behind has put the needs of English Language Learners front and center and we must continue that momentum of success. These regulations will ensure states and schools are held accountable for helping children learn English but will also provide them with flexibility in meeting the goal of every child reading and doing math at grade level by 2014." Title: Ideas for Open House
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for activities appropriate for Open House received the following suggestions. ---- I always begin Open House with a recent listening activity. The parents are always impressed with what their chilren can understand in a foreign language. Hinds, K. Re: Open house. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (7 Sept. 2006). ---- One thing that one might mention at Open House/Curriculum Night when talking about yourself and your background is that you are a member of your professional language organization. My experience has been that parents are impressed and like it when they hear things like that. If you are a level 1 teacher, this is also a great time to give publicity to the four year aspect of the program (and how it's great for college, etc.) and tell them how you are laying the groundwork for them with the hope that they continue through all 4 years of high school. Levasseur, M. Re: Open house. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (9 Sept. 2006). ---- I take pictures of the kids (in groups of 4-5) and then put them in a PowerPoint . The parents love seeing who the other kids are in class as well as the kids in my other classes (to get homework/study groups together, etc). I play the Gypsy Kings "Hotel California" as they are coming in the room. There is always someone who starts to sing along before they realize it's in Spanish. Give them your email/voice mail. Smile. Have fun! Chan, K. Re: Open house. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (9 Sept. 2006).
