TitleIdeas for Open House

A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for activities appropriate for Open House received the following suggestions.

----

I always begin Open House with a recent listening activity. The parents are always impressed with what their chilren can understand in a foreign language.

One thing that one might mention at Open House/Curriculum Night when talking about yourself and your background is that you are a member of your professional language organization. My experience has been that parents are impressed and like it when they hear things like that. If you are a level 1 teacher, this is also a great time to give publicity to the four year aspect of the program (and how it's great for college, etc.) and tell them how you are laying the groundwork for them with the hope that they continue through all 4 years of high school.

I take pictures of the kids (in groups of 4-5) and then put them in a PowerPoint . The parents love seeing who the other kids are in class as well as the kids in my other classes (to get homework/study groups together, etc).

I play the Gypsy Kings "Hotel California" as they are coming in the room. There is always someone who starts to sing along before they realize it's in Spanish.

Give them your email/voice mail. Smile. Have fun!
