A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for French-language country music recommendations received the following suggestions.

----

Go to http://www.archamabault.ca and do searches on artists like Tex Lecor, Willie Lamothe, (la famille) Daraîche, Patrick Norman, Georges Hamel, Michèle Richard, and don't forget Zachary Richard from Louisiana. Several of these musicians have their own Web sites. You can download 30 second clips or whole songs. The lyrics can usually be found at http://www.paroles.net.

There are a whole lot of country artists in Quebec and often there are country music festivals. A well-known one advertises each year at Quebec's Winter Carnaval is the "Festival Western de Ste-Tite". You might find the names of some current artists there. The festival site is http://www.festivalwestern.com .

A current artist: Gildor Roy (truck drivin' music). I really like Gildor. He acts, he sings and he often emcees TV shows. http://www.passeport.qc.ca/artistes/gildor/gildor.html

Les Cowboys Fringants are Quebec’s top group and their Web site contains audio and video clips. Listen for their songs: ‘Toune d'automne,’ ‘Les étoiles filantes’ and ‘Plus rien.’

Stef Carse had a French version of ‘Achy Breaky Danse.’
Steve Faulkner’s good tune is ‘Si j’avais un char.’
Beau Dommage’s ‘Le blues de la métropole’ is almost country.

There are many groups in Québec playing some type of country music. A group I really enjoy is Éloï et Jonathan Painchaud - they're a couple of brothers with a nice blend of country, rock, and folk music from Québec that will please your country fans without alienating your non-country fans.

Also check out Céline Dion's CD "1 fille et 4 types" - it's an album reaching back to her roots. I know country & Céline don't sound like they would mix but it really is a terrific album.
