Title: Maximizing Study Abroad Research Project
Body: PROGRAM UPDATE: Maximizing Study Abroad Research Project The research project entitled "Maximizing study abroad through language and culture strategies" began in September 2002 under the direction of Professors Andrew D. Cohen and R. Michael Paige. The study was funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Title VI International Research and Studies Program. Research assistants for the project were Holly Emert, Joseph Hoff, and Rachel Shively and the project advisory committee members were Dr. Barbara Freed, Carnegie-Mellon University (language), Dr. Mitch Hammer, School of International Service, American University (culture), and Dr. Bruce LaBrack, School of International Studies, University of the Pacific (study abroad). The research was comprised of three related studies that investigated the use and impact of the Maximizing Study Abroad guidebook series for students, program professionals, and language instructors. The overarching research question was: "To what degree and in what ways can a strategies-based approach to developing language skills and enhancing ability to function in a new culture, transmitted by means of a set of integrated study abroad guides for students, program professionals, and instructors respectively, promote language gain and cultural adaptation by students abroad?" To understand this question, the researchers examined in depth the following issues: Students: Do study abroad students use the strategies in the Students' Guide in order to deal with the target language and culture? How, and in which contexts do they utilize these strategies? How frequently do they use the language and culture strategies? Program Professionals: What are ways that program professionals use the Program Professionals' Guide in student orientation? How do they actually use the guide? How do they perceive the role of this guide in the student orientation process? Language Instructors: In what ways do language instructors utilize the Instructors' Guide in their language teaching and advising? CARLA. CARLA Update National Email Newsletter: Fall 2005. Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition. CARLA@umn.edu (20 Nov. 2005). For more information on the study, visit http://www.carla.umn.edu/maxsa/research.html .

Title: More Scrapbooking Ideas
Body: Here are some more suggestions from the FLTEACH listserv for having students create scrapbooks. These were intended for younger learners, but they could be adapted for use with a wide range of languages, levels, and ages. ---- My level one classes did two first-day-of-school pages. On the first pages I gave them sentence starters like: - My teacher's name is.... - I felt... - For lunch I ate... - At recess I... - My favorite class is.... On the second page I had them write a simple formula poem about the first day of school - noun - 2 verbs - 3 adjectives - noun This week they'll be doing pages about their family members. Brady, T. Re: Anyone a scrapbooker? Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (18 Oct. 2005). ---- I have them do a nine-week project about a country and they can integrate scrapbooking in it by making a "travel brochure" about their country. If they have been there, they are able to use personal pictures; if not, they can use the Internet or stickers from a scrapbook store to make their project look better. I also am going to do a "collage" during the next nine weeks using words from the dictionary. Students create their own dictionaries. They can draw pictures or use magazine cutouts or stickers. This is also another way to integrate scrapbooking into the classroom. I hope my answer helps. We are trying to focus on multiple intelligences this year and it has really brought out some great things in the children. Kasserman, T.S. Re: Anyone a scrapbooker? Title: Wintermarkt in St. Louis, MO
Body: Dear Friends and Colleagues, Again this year we are having our annual art and artisan fair. It is in the tradition of the German Advent fairs, but reworked for our diverse community. I will be handling the chestnut roasting as usual. Below is the description; if you respond to this email off the listserv, I can send you a pdf copy of the flyer, which includes a map. If you are an artist or artisan interested in a space, please contact the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Council office at 314-862-5122. mit schönsten Wintergrüßen, Mark Banaszak Wintermarkt will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 11 am to 4 pm. We will have a blacksmith this year, and carriage rides again. We'll have a food tent with brats, roasted chestnuts, hot cider, a special German treat from the St. Louis Gast House for purchase, all in addition to our fabulous bake sale items. Our bake sale will include those amazing cookie/ornaments in the shape of Gingerbread Men. We will have several musical acts--the Pikers (an a capella group) again this year and the St. Roch Handbell group. All the money raised goes to support artists (via their sales) and the West End Arts Council. The WEAC funds art project in the neighborhood (recently the mosaic on the stage at Greg Freeman Park at Four Corners, and music at National Night Out). Banaszak, M.
