Title: Establishing a Rigorous, Individualized Environment in the Classroom
Body:

This week's Activity of the Week is an inventory for educators to use when planning for, and establishing, a rigorous, individualized environment for neuroatypical learners.

Objectives:

Teachers will be able to:

  • Examine personal awareness of the needs of individual learners.

  • Articulate a plan for promoting a rigourous environment for individual learners.

Materials: Inventory

Procedure:

1. Read the Inventory with a specifc learner in mind.

2. Read the Inventory again. Circle every statement in the inventory that you feel confident of when thinking of the student.

3. Select one statement you did not circle as your goal. Articulate your plan for achieving the goal by stating specific steps you will engage in, setting a timeline for yourself, and establishing a way to measure your progress.

4. Share your goal with a trusted colleague for feedback and guidance.

5. Reflect regularly on your progress and change your goal when it is appropriate to do so.

Title: A Fond Farewell to Student Interns
Body:

Last September, CASLS hosted ten student-teachers from China and Taiwan. They completed full-time educational internships at elementary schools in both Eugene and Springfield, Oregon.

The students are majoring in English education, early childhood education, or Chinese language. During the five-month program, the student interns began their journey as observers and assistants before leading their own instructional activities such as small reading groups or Chinese cultural afterschool programs.

The student interns expanded their views about educational systems and instructional practice while gaining confidence working with local students.

“We are sad to see them leave, but look forward to seeing their success in their classrooms,” says East Asia Programs Director Li-Hsien Yang.

Title: University Strengthens Industry Engagement
Body:

CASLS is proud to be part of the newly formed University of Oregon Industry Engagement Group. The group is working to identify challenges related to partnerships between the university and private industry and to discuss potential solutions.

The university already has a deep history of engaging with private industry to host student interns, for example, and to undertake collaborative research. The UO is ranked fifth in the Association of American Universities in licensing per research dollar and thirtieth in patents per research dollar.

“There are innovations happening with university research, and the impact and implications of that research can be much bigger when the university collaborates with industry. And vice versa. There’s a lot of great things happening in private companies, and a university structure can be slow to respond,” says Mandy Gettler, CASLS Associate Director, who assists with the establishment of public-private partnerships at CASLS.

The Industry Engagement Group is seeking solutions for a faster response to industry trends and for easing administrative burden required to solidify partnerships.

The working group, led by UO Corporate Relations and Innovation Partnership Services, boasts an interdisciplinary membership, with members coming from a variety of domains and expertise.

Title: Book: Crossing Linguistic Boundaries
Body:

From: https://linguistlist.org/issues/31/31-50.html

In contrast to the previously rigid descriptions of the English linguistic system, this volume dives into case studies which do not fall neatly within traditional linguistic domains and boundaries. It looks at a wide variety of topics within linguistics such as phonology, phonetics, semantics, morphology, and syntax and will therefore appeal to anyone interested in linguistic variation in English.

This book, drawing on research from neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics, investigates the hidden structure behind what we say, sign, and understand.
