After examining reflective practices and portfolio use in the world language classroom, participants will design their own learning scenarios that promote higher-order cognitive and social engagement for learners. By the end of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Develop and outline an approach for implementing reflective practices and portfolio use in the world language classroom;
- Employ effective epistemological routines to support portfolio use in the world language classroom;
- Articulate language learning outcomes that promote intercultural competence in concert with language acquisition;
- Create learning scenarios that promote reflection and higher-order cognitive and social engagement for learners; and
- Connect learning scenario activities to portfolio use and implementation.

Using Technology in Second Language Teaching

Participants will learn how to use technology to facilitate student use of the target language and get hands-on practice in using computers to promote students' interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational communication skills. By the end of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Locate authentic multimedia materials for incorporation into the language curriculum;
- Analyze technology tools and applications to engage students in activities for the three communicative modes;
- Evaluate effective technology integration into the language curriculum; and
- Create interpretive, presentational, and interpersonal activities for students that incorporate technology tools and digital multimedia materials.

Teaching Language Through the Lens of Social Justice

Participants in this institute will learn how teach for and about social justice in the foreign language classroom. Note: this institute is built around ACTFL’s second edition of Words and Actions and is taught by the authors of the book.
By the end of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe basic principles of social justice education;
- Create a classroom environment that fosters social justice education;
- Design original foreign language units that integrate topics of social justice;
- Adapt textbooks and other classroom materials to incorporate social justice principles; and
- Engage in self-assessment and reflection regarding social justice education.

- Bring everyday culture into language instruction;
- Apply common frameworks of culture and culture learning;
- Create integrated language-and-culture learning objectives and lessons;
- Use authentic materials for teaching culture;
- Assess culture learning; and
- Use textbooks for culture learning and unlearning.

Teaching World Languages and Cultures in Elementary Settings

In this institute, participants will gain proficiency-based lesson design and assessment skills necessary to teach world languages and cultures at the elementary level. By the end of the institute, participants will be able to:
- Identify the unique characteristics of young language learners and apply an understanding of how best to teach language to young learners in meaningful ways;
- Explain ACTFL’s National World Readiness standards and apply them to curricular planning, instruction, and assessment;
- Develop thematic lesson plans and curricular units that are standards-based and aligned with established learning and proficiency targets;
- Use a range of strategies to build students’ vocabulary and language proficiency and to support language use and development; and
- Apply an understanding of how to “bring language to life” with a range of materials games, songs, and activities.
