Title: Pilot Schools Wanted for Online Japanese Assessment of Listening, Speaking, and Reading
Body: From: "Sachiko Kamioka" -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not send your reply to me (kamioka@darkwing.uoregon.edu), but reply to jppilot@darkwing.uoregon.edu. Thank you. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Japanese teachers, Would you like to find our your students' Japanese proficiency level for listening, speaking, and reading for free of charge this fall? Measuring student proficiency accurately and efficiently is the key maintaining high standards, motivating students, and improving articulation. The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon is looking for pilot teachers willing to pilot an online assessment of speaking, listening, and reading this fall. This assessment, called STAMP 2, builds on an existing reading and writing assessment already developed. It assesses students' proficiency levels based upon ACTFL guidelines for Novice-Low to Intermediate-High. STAMP 2 is innovative both pedagogically and technically. Real life tasks are clustered based on different themes and the test is designed to assess interpretive and presentational modes in the national standards. The Interpretive section (listening and reading) is computer adaptive and its results become available immediately after test. Presentational mode (speaking and writing) sections are graded by human graders. The test uses streaming video and technology to record and deliver sound files over the Internet. To take the test, students just need a recent browser and Quicktime, both of which can be downloaded for free. If you are interested, please email jppilot@darkwing.uoregon.edu by July 31. Sincerely, Japanese STAMP 2 pilot coordinator Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) The Northwest National Foreign Language Resource Center 5290 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-5290 Email: jppilot@darkwing.uoregon.edu Phone: 541-346-5995 Fax: 541-346-0322 http://CASLS.uoregon.edu

Title: Class Size...Does it Count?
Body: From: "C P" Just today, Florida's governor signed a bill into law that mandates smaller class sizes. He seemed to be reluctant to do so, citing concerns about the economics behind the legislation. Here is my question: Does your state have class size laws? If so, when were they enacted? Did enacting these laws cause any type of serious financial harm to the state's budget? (In other words, did your pay become frozen as a result of te legislation?) I am very curious to know about this. Write soon and let me know! P.S. Can you direct me to quality journal publications where the class size issue was investigated? Thanks in advance! :o)

Title: New NCES Report on Higher Education Expenditures
Body: From: The NCES study, "A Study of Higher Education Instructional Expenditures: The Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity" examines multiple years of data from the Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity, which analyzes teaching loads and instructional costs at the level of academic discipline. The study determined that, for those four-year institutions participating in the Delaware Study, approximately 80 percent of the variation in instructional costs across institutions is associated with the mix of disciplines at those institutions. The study further identifies institutional characteristics that are most closely associated with the magnitude of instructional costs. To download, view and print the report as a pdf file, please visit: http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2003161

Title: OPI Scores for College Credit!
Body: From: "Devin P Browne" The Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association has just gotten word that Indiana University of Pennsylvania will grant college credits to incoming students of Spanish who attain an INTERMEDIATE-MID or higher on an ACTFL OPI. I expect that the German and French programs will shortly follow suit. This is great news and a big INCENTIVE for students to continue beyond the "two year requirement" that some high school counselors say is all that is needed in language study. **TAKE ACTION!!** With IUP accepting OPI scores for advanced standing, there are sure to be other universities & colleges to follow. Please consider contacting your college alma mater (email is a great thing for this!) and ask if they are considering a similar measure (and if they are not, suggest that they do!). These types of changes will not happen unless language department faculty know that other institutions are offering this. Consider copying and pasting the exact words of the proposal that was accepted by the IUP University Senate: "A new student who has achieved an Intermediate-Mid level or higher on an ACTFL rated Oral Proficiency Interview will receive 4 semester hours of credit. Additionally the student must take the regular placement exam to determine for which course, either Spanish 102 or Spanish 201, the semester hour credit will apply. The granting of credit will not apply to native speakers nor to heritage speakers." Congratulations to the IUP foreign language faculty who worked on developing this proposal and seeing that it became official policy!! Cheers!
