TitleOPI Scores for College Credit!
Body
From: "Devin P Browne"

The Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association has
just gotten word that Indiana University of
Pennsylvania will grant college credits to incoming
students of Spanish who attain an INTERMEDIATE-MID or
higher on an ACTFL OPI. I expect that the German and
French programs will shortly follow suit.

This is great news and a big INCENTIVE for students to
continue beyond the "two year requirement" that some
high school counselors say is all that is needed in
language study.

**TAKE ACTION!!**

With IUP accepting OPI scores for advanced standing,
there are sure to be other universities & colleges to
follow. Please consider contacting your college alma
mater (email is a great thing for this!) and ask if
they are considering a similar measure (and if they
are not, suggest that they do!). These types of
changes will not happen unless language department
faculty know that other institutions are offering
this.

Consider copying and pasting the exact words of the
proposal that was accepted by the IUP University
Senate:

"A new student who has achieved an Intermediate-Mid
level or higher on an ACTFL rated Oral Proficiency
Interview will receive 4 semester hours of credit.
Additionally the student must take the regular
placement exam to determine for which course, either
Spanish 102 or Spanish 201, the semester hour credit
will apply. The granting of credit will not apply to
native speakers nor to heritage speakers."

Congratulations to the IUP foreign language faculty
who worked on developing this proposal and seeing that
it became official policy!!

Cheers!
