Title: VAuLT: Virtual and Augmented Reality for Language Training
Body:

The Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) is committed to ongoing pedagogical innovation and teacher support. An outgrowth of this commitment is VAuLT (Virtual and Augmented Reality for Language Training), a project that is one of CASLS’ current initiatives.

VAuLT utilizes cutting-edge technology to create virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) modules targeting real-world, unscripted language for professional and community domains. Each VAuLT module will situate learners in immersive contexts so they may gain the critical language skills they need. Learner outcomes will be promoted through three guiding pedagogical principles: 1) context-based content including vocabulary, grammar, and communication strategies; 2) a primary focus on pragmatics in which learning is based on appropriately navigating communicative scenarios and interpreting meaning; and 3) a strategic focus to help learners increase language capacities efficiently and effectively while learning how to learn.

Keep on the lookout for more information about VAuLT and the learning modules as they are released.

Perspectives on Language as Action
Edited by Mari Haneda and Hossein Nassaji
Published by Multilingual Matters

This edited volume has been compiled in honor of Professor Merrill Swain, one of the most prominent scholars in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) and second language (L2) education. For over four decades, her work has contributed substantially to the knowledge base of the field of applied linguistics, and her ideas have had a significant influence in a range of subfields, including immersion education, mainstream SLA, and sociocultural theory and SLA. The range of topics covered in the book reflects the breadth and depth of Swain’s contributions, expertise and interests. The volume is divided into four parts: immersion education, languaging, sociocultural perspectives on L2 teaching and learning, and developments in language as social action.

Title: Book: Critical Reflections on Research Methods
Body:

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781788922548

Critical Reflections on Research Methods: Power and Equity in Complex Multilingual Contexts
Edited by Doris S. Warriner and Martha Bigelow
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book explores the challenges and opportunities involved in conducting research with members of immigrant, refugee and other minoritized communities. Through first-hand reflective accounts, contributors explore community-based collaborative work, and suggest important implications for applied linguistics, educational research and anthropological investigations of language, literacy and culture. By critically reflecting on the power and limits of university-based research conducted on behalf of, or in collaboration with, members of local communities and by exploring the complicated relationships, dynamics and understandings that emerge, the chapters collectively demonstrate the value of reflecting on the possibilities and challenges of the research process, including the ethical and emotional dimensions of participating in collaborative research.
