Title: In Bengkala, Bali, 80% of Population Speaks Kata Kolok, a Sign Language
Body:

From https://www.greatbigstory.com/stories/wells-fargo-the-village-of-the-deaf

Bengkala, a small village tucked away in the jungles of Bali, is a demographic anomaly. Of a total 3,000 people, 40 are Deaf. Their condition is linked to a recessive gene that’s been passed down through seven generations. Rather than ostracize Deaf community members, the people of Bengkala created Kata Kolok, a distinctly local sign language that’s spoken by 80 percent of the population.

New Law Will Help Preserve Cherokee Language
By Gwendolyn Glenn
July 18, 2018

Last month, North Carolina General Assembly members passed legislation that will allow Cherokees without degrees or certification to teach the tribe’s language and cultural practices to native students. Eastern Band Cherokee officials say they don’t have enough licensed teachers fluent in their language to reach all students, and they fear it will die out.

...Under the legislation, the state superintendent would recommend teachers to the state board of education. If approved, they would be trained and teach only language and cultural classes.

“While this is groundbreaking for North Carolina, in Indian country this is a relationship that we saw already in other states that have federally recognized tribes with living language," [Renissa] McLaughlin said. "They had legislation at the state level and the tribes entered into MOUs (memorandum of understanding) with the state or their department of education."

Title: Student Learning Objectives: Timed Writes and Vocabulary Growth
Body:

From https://spanishplans.org

In many school systems, teachers are expected to establish Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and track student progress over the course of the teaching year.

In this series of blog posts, a Spanish teacher presents how you can use timed writes to assess gains in student fluency in the target language (https://spanishplans.org/2018/07/23/slo-and-vocabulary/) and how you can use repeated iterations of a vocabulary test to track vocabulary growth (https://spanishplans.org/2018/07/23/slo-and-vocabulary/).
