Title: Four Ways to Practice Short Oral Presentations
Body:

From https://www.middleweb.com/38152/4-fun-ways-to-practice-short-oral-presentations/

Larry Ferlazzo and Katie Hull Sypnieski share four activities that get students practicing their presentational skills with short presentations. Some are quite widely used, like speed dating and PechaKucha, while another, talking points presentations, is somewhat elaborate but looks like a good technique for guiding student away from directly reading from their notes.

Read about all four strategies at https://www.middleweb.com/38152/4-fun-ways-to-practice-short-oral-presentations/
The strategies are adapted from Ferlazzo and Hull Sypnieski's book The ELL Teacher's Toolbox. You can purchase this book at https://www.amazon.com/ELL-Teachers-Toolbox-Hundreds-Practical/dp/1119364965/ and read more about it at http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/24906

Title: Five Principles of Instruction for English Language Learners: What All Teachers Should Know
Body:

The five, research-based principles in this resource are “big ideas” or concepts about second-language acquisition and the academic challenges English learners face. Taken together, the principles can help teachers adapt their instruction and better support academic success for the English learner students in their classrooms. These five principles apply to all teachers, regardless of what grade or subject area they teach.

The five principles are as follows:
• Principle 1: English learners move through different stages as they acquire English proficiency and, at all stages, need comprehensible input.
• Principle 2: There is a difference between conversational and academic language; fluency in everyday conversation is not sufficient to ensure access to academic texts and tasks.
• Principle 3: English learners need instruction that will allow them to meet state content standards.
• Principle 4: English learners have background knowledge and home cultures that sometimes differ from the U.S. mainstream.
• Principle 5: Assessments measure language proficiency as well as actual content knowledge.

Title: Using a Textbook - Or Not?
Body:

Recently an FLTEACH listserv user asked fellow teachers how they use textbooks in their classes, what they've learned about effective instruction with a textbook, and any other considerations. Read the original query here: https://listserv.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1807&L=FLTEACH&D=0&I=-3&d=No+Match%3BMatch%3BMatches&P=68488

Responses have been abundant and insightful; to read all of them, click on "Next" by "By Topic" at the above link.

Two of note are a summary of a literature review on textbooks as a tool, by Richard Madel (https://listserv.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1807&L=FLTEACH&D=0&I=-3&d=No+Match%3BMatch%3BMatches&P=79817) and some nice, specific curriculum design suggestions from Lori Szymanski (https://listserv.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind1807&L=FLTEACH&D=0&I=-3&d=No+Match%3BMatch%3BMatches&P=84973)

Title: Writing Assignments Get Language Learners Out Exploring the Local Community
Body:

Elena Shvidko provides a list of writing assignments that require students to get out and explore the local community. Here are a few examples:

• Visit a local museum, library, or exhibit hall and write a reflective piece on their experience.
• Write an opinion paper on cleaning and recycling measures (or lack thereof) undertaken by the local city administration.
• Volunteer in an event sponsored by the local community and describe their experience.
• Examine menus from local restaurants and write a paper discussing whether or not they believe the restaurants cater to diverse populations of customers.

These assignments could be used at different age levels and would also be good for students studying abroad or living in a community with heritage speakers.

Title: Brittany Kent Joins CASLS as Graphic Designer
Body:

CASLS is excited to welcome Brittany Kent as our new graphic designer. Brittany has been doing graphic design and photography since 2012, and she graduated this spring from Boise State University with a BFA in graphic design. In addition to her artistic skills, Brittany is bringing a lot of enthusiasm to her new job. She says, "I am excited for the new challenges CASLS has for me! I aspire to live a life where I am constantly learning and I believe CASLS will keep me on my toes."

Brittany shares an enthusiasm for languages with many other CASLS staff. She says, "My favorite language learning experience was learning American Sign Language a year ago. I took ASL online one semester and in person my second semester. I had a wonderful ASL professor that was Deaf and had been immersed in Deaf Culture her entire life. She was gracious enough to share those experiences with our class and from that, I have an entirely new perspective on different cultures other than my own."

Brittany's hobbies include movies, ceramics, and exploring the outdoors around Boise, where she currently lives.

Welcome to our team, Brittany!
