Reflections on Task-Based Language Teaching
By Rod Ellis
Published by Multilingual Matters

Task-based language teaching is now a well-established pedagogic approach but problematic issues remain, such as whether it is appropriate for all learners and in all instructional contexts. This book draws on the author’s experience of working with teachers, together with his knowledge of relevant research and theory, to examine the key issues. It proposes flexible ways in which tasks can be designed and implemented in the language classroom to address the problems that teachers often face with task-based language teaching. It will appeal to researchers and teachers who are interested in task-based language teaching and the practical and theoretical issues involved. It will also be of interest to students and researchers working in the areas of applied linguistics, TESOL and second language acquisition.

Title: Book: Multilinguals' Verbalisation and Perception of Emotions

Multilinguals' Verbalisation and Perception of Emotions
By Pia Resnik
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book investigates the interplay of language, emotion and gender in a multilingual context and provides rich insights into the complexities of bilingualism and the field of emotion research, as well as the intersection of both. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses of data, the book examines multilinguals' verbalisation and perception of emotions in their first language and English, their second language (L2). The research looks at crosslinguistic, intercultural and gender-based differences, thereby highlighting the challenges faced by multilinguals in this context and the potential risks of miscommunication and misinterpretation. Results support the call for a change of paradigm towards a holistic approach to multilingualism and emotion research and highlight the similarities and differences in L2 users of English when expressing their emotions in the different languages. The book will appeal to anyone interested in research on emotions in the context of bi-/multilingualism or second language acquisition, as well as those teaching or learning multiple languages.

Educating Across Borders: The Case of a Dual Language Program on the U.S.-Mexico Border
By María Teresa de la Piedra, Blanca Araujo, and Alberto Esquinca
Published by the University of Arizona Press

Educating Across Borders is an ethnography of the learning experience of transfronterizxs, border-crossing students living on the U.S.-Mexico border whose lives span two countries and two languages. Authors María Teresa de la Piedra, Blanca Araujo, and Alberto Esquinca examine language practices and funds of knowledge these students use as learning resources to navigate through their binational, dual language school experience.

The authors, who themselves live and work on the border, question artificially created cultural and linguistic borders. To explore this issue, they employed participant-observation, focus groups, and individual interviews with teachers, administrators, and staff members to construct rich understandings of the experiences of transfronterizx students. These ethnographic accounts of their daily lives counter entrenched deficit perspectives about transnational learners.

Drawing on border theory, immigration and border studies, funds of knowledge, and multimodal literacies, Educating Across Borders is a critical contribution toward the formation of a theory of physical and metaphorical border crossings that ethnic minoritized students in U.S. schools must make as they traverse the educational system.

Title: Call for Papers: Special Journal Issue on Corpus-Based Language Teaching and Learning
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/29/29-2988.html

Call for Papers:
Special issue of the International Journal of Applied Linguistics
Corpus-based language teaching and learning: applications and implications

The great advances in corpus building and tools in recent years are yet to be matched by the actual use of corpora in language teaching. The last decade has seen a surge in corpus-based teaching approaches in second/foreign language classrooms, as teachers around the world realize the importance of authentic data in their classrooms. However, the move to a more corpus-conscious approach is not an easy task, especially for less common or resource-poor languages. The potential applications of corpora in language teaching are numerous, whether by using specific corpus-based tasks in the classroom or by developing corpus-informed teaching materials.

This special issue will aim to present a panoramic view of the latest trends in the corpus-based teaching approach and how they are shaping the language classroom. Research related to under-represented languages is especially welcome.
The themes of this special issue include, but are not limited to:
- Using corpora for the teaching of vocabulary and grammar.
- Using corpora for improving writing skills.
- The impact of corpora on designing curricula and/or syllabi
- Corpus-based language textbooks
- Written vs spoken corpora in teaching
- Experimental research on using corpora in language teaching

To express interest, submit an abstract by September 15, 2018.

Title: Call for Papers: Fifth Saarbrücken Conference on Foreign Language Teaching
Body:

From https://linguistlist.org/issues/29/29-2992.html

5th Saarbrücken Conference on Foreign Language Teaching
The Magic of Language - Productivity in Linguistics and Language Teaching
October 29-31, 2019
Saarbrücken, Germany

The theme of the Fifth Saarbrücken Conference on Foreign Language Teaching is productivity in linguistics and language teaching, the productive use of language often being marked by an undeniable magic. This magic does not only consist in the fact that people are capable of understanding each other if they master the same code. It is also true when people talk about things they have never talked about and when new ideas occur to them or when they use notions and words that have not existed before, i.e. when they employ language productively and construct their own world.

Participants who wish to give an academic talk are requested to submit their abstract by 31 August 2019.

Title: Call for Funded Participation: Workshop on Community-based Language Research across the Americas
Body:

The Workshop on Community-based Language Research across the Americas (CBLRAA) will be the day before the annual LSA/SSILA meetings next January.

The workshop will take place in New York City on January 2 and 3, 2019 before the start of the annual meetings of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas (SSILA). Funded workshop participants will also be asked to prepare and present a poster at the SSILA 2019 meeting. Organizers will help guide participants on the preparation of their posters. This will be an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and ideas with a wider audience of linguistics researchers.

Funded participants will receive financial support for travel, lodging, and meals to attend the workshop. If you need visa support to travel to the U.S., we will help to arrange this. You are eligible to apply (or be nominated) to be a funded participant if 1) you are actively involved in documentation, revitalization, reclamation or other type of project involving an Indigenous language or languages of the Americas; 2) you have some formal or informal training in linguistics; and 3) you are from an Indigenous community of the Americas.

Preference will be given to applicants 1) whose participation is most likely to lead U.S.-based researchers to reflect on and reevaluate their own practices, 2) whose participation in the workshop is most likely to lead to new collaborations to document, revitalize, and maintain an Indigenous language or languages of the Americas, and 3) who are from regions or communities otherwise not represented at the workshop or SSILA meeting.

Applications are due by August 20, 2018.
