Title: Ideas for the Beginning of the School year in Spanish
Body:

Here are a few different ideas for how you can start the coming school year in your Spanish classes:

Allison of the Secondary Spanish Space blog describes how she plans to start the coming school year, by focusing on high frequency verbs: http://www.secondaryspanishspace.com/2018/07/back-to-spanish-class-how-to-start-year.html

Julie of Mundo de Pepita suggests doing a comparison of healthy lunches, incorporating authentic resources, in this blog post: https://elmundodepepita.blogspot.com/2018/07/cultural-comparison-of-school-lunches.html

Consider giving your students an interest survey on the first day of school, as described here on Señora Chase's blog: https://senorachase.com/2018/07/06/thinking-ahead-for-next-year-student-interest-survey/

You can also take a look at Señora Chase's syllabus to get ideas for your own: https://senorachase.com/2018/07/05/thinking-ahead-for-next-year-syllabus/

Title: Problem-Based Units for Advanced Students of Spanish
Body:

From https://www.oercommons.org/courseware/module/19398

Here is a nice set of open educational resources that challenges advanced Spanish learners to explore compelling issues from the Spanish-speaking world through project-based learning.

Each unit introduces a problem that students must solve collaboratively in small teams (4-6) over the course of approximately four weeks, assuming 2-3 class meetings per week. The instructor coaches the teams as they seek to fill gaps in understanding, revise hypotheses to incorporate new knowledge, and craft solutions that recognize various perspectives on the problem. Each unit is based on particular objectives, but the skills and processes students will exercise are the same across all units: collaborative problem solving, self-directed research and synthesis of information, argumentation based on sound evidence, and communication in Spanish.

Title: Policy Brief: English Learner Program Models in K-12 Education
Body:

From https://www.migrationpolicy.org/research/english-learner-program-models-k-12-education

A Matter of Design: English Learner Program Models in K-12 Education
By Julie Sugarman

The instructional programs educators design to help English Learner (EL) students work toward English proficiency look different in schools across the United States. This is due in part to the variety of approaches K-12 educators take to important questions such as: Should the program foster bilingualism or focus solely on English? Should ELs learn alongside their English-proficient peers or be taught in a tailored EL-only class? And how should English as a Second Language (ESL) specialists and general education teachers work together to make sure ELs get the support they need?

At a time when policymakers, advocates, parents, and other community members are encouraged to work with schools to close achievement gaps between ELs and non-ELs, this guide aims to help these stakeholders understand the differences between EL program models. It describes the characteristics of some of the most common program types—dual language, transitional bilingual education, and English only—and examines the factors that shape schools’ decisions to use a particular model or set of models.

Title: Rubric for District English Learner Programs
Body:

From http://educationnorthwest.org/resources/rubric-district-english-learner-programs

Designed to help districts assess and optimize their English learner (EL) services, this research-based tool contains 70 items organized into eight sections that address key components of a district’s program for English learners. Topics in the rubric were identified from research on how districts support instructional improvement and from research concerning resource needs for educating non-English speaking students. The rubric focuses on organizing and managing EL programs at the district level. The rubric does not address day-to-day choices teachers make in preparing lessons or delivering instruction to ELs.

Access the rubric and learn more about it at http://educationnorthwest.org/resources/rubric-district-english-learner-programs
