Title: Lingvo App Can Make Movies More Comprehensible
Body:

From http://www.businessinsider.com/lingvo-tv-helps-you-learn-a-new-language-using-netflix-2016-5

This helpful tool makes Netflix an easy way to learn a new language
Nathan McAlone
May 24, 2016

Netflix can be a great tool for learning a new language, as can watching foreign movies and TV shows in general. Comparing the subtitles and the audio can help supersize your vocabulary.

But it's not a perfect system. Let's say you're an English speaker trying to learn Spanish. You can watch a Spanish movie with English subtitles, and compare the two to learn new words. But there are some words you might not immediately be able to translate from sounds to letters, and these can slip by.

You could also watch a Spanish movie with Spanish subtitles, but then you miss the comparison between English and Spanish.

Lingvo TV, a new Chrome extension, tries to give you the best of both worlds.

The extension connects to Netflix and your phone (through an app), and lets you translate particular words in a subtitle stream into a different language. This means, in the previous example, you could watch a Spanish movie with Spanish subtitles, but translate certain words into English by tapping them on your phone. You can see the subtitle stream either on your computer (in Netflix) or on your phone (through the Lingvo TV app).

Title: Research Findings about L2 Phonology Teaching and Learning
Body:

From https://gianfrancoconti.wordpress.com

Gianfranco Conti writes, “In the last three weeks I have been researching L2 phonology acquisition as the teaching of pronunciation and decoding skills is one of my performance management targets for this year. This post, written in collaboration with Steve Smith of www.frenchteacher.net and Dylan Viñales of Garden International School, is a ‘prequel’ to a longer and more exhaustive article I will publish in a few days in which I will lay out the approach to phonology instruction I undertake in my lessons. Here I will concern myself with nine research facts about the acquisition and teaching of L2 pronunciation and decoding skills that every modern language teacher should know and that should constitute the starting point for any teaching approach to L2-phonology instruction.”

Title: Blog Post: A Whole New Meaning for ABC
Body:

From http://www.path2proficiency.com

Here is another thought-provoking blog post by Alyssa Villarreal on the path to proficiency website. This time Ms. Villarreal writes about the different ways that students are assessed: letter grades, end-of-course exams, and third-party assessments. What should be done when student performance on these different measures is inconsistent? What should assessment and instruction look like in a proficiency- and performance-based program? Read on for her thoughts: http://www.path2proficiency.com/a-whole-new-meaning-for-abc/
