Title: Book: Bilingualism Across the Lifespan: Factors Moderating Language Proficiency

Bilingualism Across the Lifespan: Factors Moderating Language Proficiency
Edited by Elena Nicoladis, PhD, and Simona Montanari, PhD
Published by the American Psychological Association

The study of bilingualism unfolds against a varied backdrop of sociocultural and sociopolitical factors. While the nature of bilingualism and multilingualism has often been misunderstood, the bilingual community is a dynamic and ever-growing part of the global population.

This book pioneers the study of bilingualism across the lifespan and in all its diverse forms. In framing the newest research within a lifespan perspective, the editors highlight the importance of considering an individual's age — from infancy to late adulthood — when researching how bilingualism affects language acquisition and cognitive development. A key theme of the volume is the variability among bilinguals, which may be due to a host of individual and sociocultural factors.

Five major topics are explored:
  early bilingualism
factors affecting bilingualism across the lifespan
academic achievement and literacy in bilinguals
  cognitive effects of bilingualism

While bilingualism is not always valued in the U.S. and thus may result in negative outcomes, in other countries and contexts, positive outcomes are common.

Thus, this book is a call for language researchers, psychologists, and educators to pursue and promote a better understanding of bilingualism in our increasingly multicultural society.

Title: Call for Papers: Interactions for Language Learning in and around Virtual Worlds
Body:

Call for Papers: ReCALL special issue “Interactions for language learning in and around virtual worlds”

The special issue seeks to bring together papers that explore the theoretical frameworks and methodologies needed by researchers to analyze interaction data from social virtual worlds.

In the proposed contributions, feedback can take many forms, including teacher-student feedback, peer feedback or crowdsourced feedback that happens in online communities and social media. Papers that highlight the multifacetedness of interactions are encouraged as well as those that offer critical reflection on both teaching practices (the rationale of using social virtual world platforms) and on the methodological tools of choice in analyses of empirical data. The issue aims to reflect a range of target languages and offer insights on different approaches to language learning in social virtual worlds that could help to open up this type of environment to practitioners / researchers who were previously hesitant to use them.

Preliminary proposals are due September 1, 2016.

Thinking Like a Historian: Immigration History Through Primary Sources
July 6 - August 2, 2016

Through online resources about immigration history, educators will learn how to incorporate and use primary sources in the elementary and middle school classroom. Teachers will explore materials from the Library of Congress collection and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, deepen their understanding of primary sources, and consider how K-8 students can benefit from observing and analyzing them.

This course will be offered completely online and will require a basic comfort level and interest in the use of computer technology as a medium for learning. The time for completing each week's work is approximately 3-4 hours.

Teaching towards Language Acquisition
Presented by: Teri Wiechart and Gary DiBianca

This 4-day course will present strategies on how to teach contextualized language while staying in the target language. Many of the strategies will be based on Stephen Krashen’s Comprehensible Input Hypothesis, which ultimately will aid in language acquisition and the foundation necessary for long-term language proficiency. We will teach unit planning using the Backwards Design approach, while using the Ohio World Language Learning Standards, the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, NCSSFL-ACTFL Can Do Statements, and IPA Summative Assessment.

The four sessions will take place August 20, August 27, September 17, and October 22 in Columbus.
