The graduate students of The University of Alabama’s Department of Modern Languages & Classics, in collaboration with the graduate students of the Department of English and the TESOL program, invite papers for our sixth annual University of Alabama Languages Conference entitled “The Many Tongues of Talk and Tale” to be held February 12-13, 2016 at The Ferguson Center of The University of Alabama.

Proposals about all languages are welcome in, but are not strictly limited to, the following topic strands:

- Sociolinguistics
- L1, L2, L3 acquisition and pedagogy
- Languages in contact
- Historical and comparative linguistics
- Non-verbal communication; sign language
- Language as presented in literature, film and music
- Voices in literature
- Feminism, gender identity
- Alterity
- Storytelling, mythology, memory

The Central Slavic Conference (CSC) annual meeting will be held on the campus of Saint Louis University October 23-25, 2015.

The CSC is the oldest regional affiliate of ASEEES, founded in 1962. CSC is a professional organization that promotes inter- and multi-disciplinary scholarship on Slavic and Eastern European-Eurasian topics in a seven-state region including Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Colorado, though the organization's members come from across the United States and around the world.

Title: Kentucky Global Symposia

Kentucky high schools are accountable to the World Language and Global Competency Program Review this school year, with elementary and middle schools having the option to use it. The Kentucky Department of Education is hosting a series of Kentucky Global Symposia for school and district personnel who have responsibility over Global Competency/World Language Programs, including the Program Review process. The focus is on sharing practical methods for developing global competencies via integration across the curriculum and current models of effective world language programs for K-12 Kentucky schools.

Upcoming symposia are September 15 in Corbin, November 9 in Shelbyville, and January 22 in Gilbertsville.

Little Saigon school to provide instruction in English and Vietnamese

A public school in Little Saigon is set to become the first in California to provide instruction in both English and Vietnamese.

DeMille Elementary School's Vietnamese Dual-Language Immersion Academy opens Wednesday in the Westminster School District.

… Students will spend half the day learning math, social studies and language arts in English, and the other half learning science, visual and performing arts and language arts in Vietnamese. The two kindergarten classes will use full school days for their lessons.
