Title: IIE AIFS Foundation Generation Study Abroad Enrichment Grants
Body:

From http://www.iie.org/Programs/Generation-Study-Abroad/Resources-for-Teachers

Part of Generation Study Abroad, the IIE AIFS Foundation Generation Study Abroad Enrichment Grants is a professional development program to support U.S. secondary level (grades 6-12) teachers who have shown to be outstanding advocates for study abroad. Teachers are powerful motivators when it comes to encouraging students to pursue any and all types of global study be it through a classroom project in second grade or on a study abroad program in college.

The goal of the program is to help raise global awareness in the classroom and prepare students for global citizenship and study abroad. Teachers who receive an enrichment grant can conduct any learning activity in the US or abroad that enhances their international outlook and global experience. Through their experiences, they will be able to further internationalize their classroom and advance their role as global educators to positively impact student learning.

Application Deadline: December 1, 2015

After 25-Year Hiatus, First Arabic-Language 'Sesame Street' Opens Again
September 6, 2015

Iftah Ya Simsim, the Arabic-language version of Sesame Street, has re-debuted in the Middle East after a 25-year hiatus.

…When it launched in 1979, Iftah Ya Simsim ("Open Sesame") was one of the earliest foreign language spinoffs of Sesame Street — and the first Arabic-language version. But the show's studio in Kuwait City was partially destroyed by fighting from the Gulf War, and Iftah Ya Simsim went off the air.

Title: American Home Russian-American Student Writing Exchange 2015-2016
Body:

From the SEELANGS listserv:

The American Home in Vladimir, Russia, in cooperation with Dr. Alexei Altonen and the English faculty at Vladimir State University, is pleased to announce the 2015-2016 Russian-American Student Writing Exchange – an opportunity to provide advanced language students additional opportunities to write in Russian and communicate with their Russian peers.

While participating in the Writing Exchange, Russian and American students will regularly communicate (about once a month) via email about selected topics. They will write in their language of study (Russian or English), with their partners correcting their grammatical, lexical, stylistic, and phraseological mistakes and then responding to what has been written.

As much as possible, we would like to pair third and fourth year American students with their Russian peers from advanced English classes at Vladimir State University.

There are several openings available in the project for new student participants. If you or your colleagues would like to provide your advanced Russian language students with additional writing and communication opportunities – or if you have any questions about the Writing Exchange, the Intensive Russian Language Program, or any other aspect of the American Home‘s work – please contact me as soon as possible (david.matthew.johnson@vanderbilt.edu).

For more information about the American Home, please visit www.serendipity-russia.com and http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-American-Home-in-Vladimir-Russia/184076861289. There you will find information about our programs and links to an introductory video, our blog, and Face Book page.

Title: Latin Reading Challenge
Body:

From http://jasonslanga.net/latin-reading-challenge-overview/

The Latin Reading Challenge is a collaborative effort to help teachers and other Latin enthusiasts increase their linguistic proficiency through extensive reading. Survey data suggest that most Latin teachers do not consistently read texts not directly related to their class work. The purpose of the challenge is to help people who currently do not read Latin on a regular basis to develop their practice, with the support of friends and colleagues, focusing on text selection, habit building, and reading strategies which develop proficiency. Over time feedback from participants – difficulties people have with scheduling and motivation, as well as practices which help people succeed – will develop a more detailed program for others looking to increase their proficiency.

You are entering Week 3 of the Latin Reading Challenge this week. Catch up with these posts from Week 0, Week 1, and Week 2, and then keep up here: http://jasonslanga.net/latin-reading-challenge-overview/

4 Strategies to Help ELLs in the Mainstream Classroom
by JyLynn Nesbitt
September 9, 2015

It is possible to help a beginning English-language learner (ELL) improve so much in a matter of months that he or she can pass the sixth through eighth grade state standardized tests. This student can go from five to 50 percent on a school curriculum test. It's happening in my middle school classroom, and it can happen in your classrooms, too. With the right support and differentiation, ELLs will be successful in your general education or language arts classroom.

As you read the following, keep in mind that these ELL strategies are good for engaging all students. That's because they're interactive and focus on the four domains of language -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening -- which all students need support in developing. Often with general education students, reading and writing get the most attention, while speaking and listening development are neglected.
