Title: National Security Language Initiative for Youth
Body:

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program was launched in 2006 to promote critical language learning among American youth. The U.S. Department of State, in cooperation with American Councils for International Education, awards and administers merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer and academic year immersion programs in locations where the seven NSLI-Y languages are spoken. NSLI-Y immerses participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.

The application deadline for 2016-17 programs is October 29, 2015 at 4 PM EST.

Visit http://www.nsliforyouth.org/how-to-apply/ for more info about the program and application requirements.

Body:

From http://aldeenfoundation.org/fallsession2015online.php

Professional Development for Arabic Teachers
Building Language Foundations
Developing core language skills - Reading

When are our students ready to read? Do we depend only on Alphabet literacy to read? Why is reading much easier when we understand what we read? What activities can be planned for pre and post reading? Can we equip our beginner students to read independently? Is reading only about decoding? How can we build a strong literacy foundation and a future appreciation for reading in early learners?

Join this fall session from October 5th to November 16th, 2015 and shape your foreign language teaching skills to:
* Reach and teach your students based on their needs and interest
* Teach reading through: context, content, diagrams, hands on activities
* Plan for a better time management using flipped classroom
* Expose Arabic learners to different Arabic calligraphy
* Use technology to create a more interesting learning experience
* Make learning and teaching more exciting and educational
* Bring best practices alive in your classroom

This interactive course provides instructors with the latest research, strategies and techniques designed for students of various ages and proficiency levels.

Spend about 100 minutes per week, listening to lectures, watching the best teaching strategies in a real classroom setting, taking quizzes and networking with experts and colleagues in the US and worldwide!

Title: Survey of K-12 Russian Teachers in Ohio
Body:

The Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) at Ohio State is reaching out to all K-12 Russian language teachers in Ohio to gauge interest in organizing a biannual or annual meeting. The meeting would be an opportunity for Russian teachers to get together and discuss issues and questions associated with textbooks, curriculum, tests, and any all other topics you would find relevant. CSEES would be able to act as the lead organizer for the meeting, cover mileage costs for teachers, and provide refreshments.

Please take this brief survey so that CSEES can determine the interest in having such a meeting and what times would work best: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e4GOjmfarhucfZP
