Title: Book: Becoming Fluent

Becoming Fluent: How Cognitive Science Can Help Adults Learn a Foreign Language
By Richard M. Roberts and Roger J. Kreuz
Published by the MIT Press

Adults who want to learn a foreign language are often discouraged because they believe they cannot acquire a language as easily as children. Once they begin to learn a language, adults may be further discouraged when they find the methods used to teach children don’t seem to work for them. What is an adult language learner to do? In this book, Richard Roberts and Roger Kreuz draw on insights from psychology and cognitive science to show that adults can master a foreign language if they bring to bear the skills and knowledge they have honed over a lifetime. Adults shouldn’t try to learn as children do; they should learn like adults.

Roberts and Kreuz report evidence that adults can learn new languages even more easily than children. Children appear to have only two advantages over adults in learning a language: they acquire a native accent more easily, and they do not suffer from self-defeating anxiety about learning a language. Adults, on the other hand, have the greater advantages—gained from experience—of an understanding of their own mental processes and knowing how to use language to do things. Adults have an especially advantageous grasp of pragmatics, the social use of language, and Roberts and Kreuz show how to leverage this metalinguistic ability in learning a new language.

Title: Book: The Acquisition of Italian
Body:

From https://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/lald.57/main

The Acquisition of Italian: Morphosyntax and its interfaces in different modes of acquisition
By Adriana Belletti and Maria Teresa Guasti
Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company

A major contribution to the study of language acquisition and language development inspired by theoretical linguistics has been made by research on the acquisition of Italian syntax. This book offers an updated overview of results from theory-driven experimental and corpus-based research on the acquisition of Italian in different modes (monolingual, early and late L2, SLI, etc.), as well as exploring possible developments for future research. The book focuses on experimental studies which address research questions generated by linguistic theory, providing a detailed illustration of the fruitful interaction between linguistic theorizing and developmental studies. The authors are leading figures in theoretical linguistics and language acquisition; their own work is featured in the research presented here. Students and advanced researchers will benefit from the systematic review offered by this book and the critical assessment of the field that it provides.

Title: Call for Chapter Proposals: Educating Refugee-Background Students
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/26/26-3142.html

Call for Chapter Proposals: Educating Refugee-Background Students: Critical Issues and Dynamic Contexts
Editors: Shawna Shapiro, Raichle Farrelly, and Mary Jane Curry
Publisher: Multilingual Matters

Overview:
This collection will offer an in-depth exploration of key issues in the education of adolescents and adults with refugee backgrounds who have been resettled in the main refugee receiving areas of North America, Australia, and Europe. Until recently, educational researchers have devoted little attention to refugee-background students, despite the high numbers of refugees living in these areas. Although research on other immigrant groups sometimes references refugees and/or asylum-seekers, much of that literature fails to take into account the particular educational backgrounds, migration experiences, and identity preferences of this population (McBrien, 2005). Hence, this volume will address geographic and thematic gaps in existing educational research.

Proposals of 750-1000 words that detail the proposed chapter’s data sources, main argument, theoretical framework and research methodology and follow APA guidelines will be accepted until October 15, 2015.
