Title: Call for Papers: Technology for Second Language Learning Conference, DEADLINE Sept 8
Body: I wanted to share this second call for papers for an exciting conference at Iowa State University with you. It is also available online at http://www.iastate.edu/~apling/conf/tsll/2004/homepage.html - 2nd CALL FOR PAPERS - Technology for Second Language Learning 2nd annual conference Interpreting Data in CALL Research Saturday, October 2, 2004 Memorial Union, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa Keynote speaker Paul Gruba Senior Lecturer, Horwood Language Centre, The University of Melbourne Research investigating the use of technology for language learning relies on multiple forms of data collection to address theoretical and practical issues, but methods for analysis pose challenges for researchers. What methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation can help to address the specific needs of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) developers and users? Papers presented at this conference will seek to address this question by exploring approaches to research on CALL. Researchers in CALL and CALL-related disciplines are invited to submit abstracts for papers on approaches to data interpretation in CALL research. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to the following: * Description of human-computer interaction through interpretation of video, concurrent and retrospective verbal protocols, screen-capture data, and tracking * Approaches for operational assessment of individual differences relevant to the use of CALL * Frameworks for integrating multiple sources of data concerning the value of CALL for L2 learning * Measurement issues pertaining to assessment of language and other relevant constructs in CALL research Abstracts (200 - 400 words) must be submitted electronically by September 8, 2004 to Volker Hegelheimer (volkerh@iastate.edu) Hosted by the Program in Teaching English as a Second Language/Applied Linguistics, Department of English, and the CALL Club, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Title: Jeux Olympiques in French
Body: To begin the year, I plan to "profiter de" the interest in the Olympics by beginning with a sports unit. There is some GREAT stuff in French on the official web site. Start with the Espace Jeunesse: http://www.athens2004.com/fr/Youth2004/youth and play one of the games, look up events and athlete biographies, etc. etc. Sorry, Spanish teachers: site is in English, Greek & French, although you could go to Athletes/Biographies and see what events each country is entering... For Canada's athletes: http://www.rds.ca/jo/ in French And TF1's coverage of French athletes: http://www.eurosport.fr/home/pages/V4/L3/S82/sport_Lng3_Spo82.shtml Blaz, D. Les JO. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (12 Aug. 2004). This site has over 13,000 specific terms related to the Olympics. You can view very technical vocabulary for each sport by clicking on the link for each sport. http://www.lexique-jo.org/2004/lexique.cfm?type=1 I am using some of this on a bulletin board for the beginning of the year: "Let the Learning Begin!" I'll also have participating Spanish and French-speaking countries information. The NBC site has a neat country section: http://www.nbcolympics.com/countries/index.html von Werder, R. Title: Software: Random Name Generator
Body: I have been using a seating chart maker for years from Boomeria and last year with my LCD projector began using the drilling program from the same company. You can get the shareware for Mac and Windows for about $5.00. website: http://home.comcast.net/~pqboom/drill.html The program did go through all the names randomly before calling the names a second time in a different order. I've been emailing the company to see if this has been changed since 1998. They tell me in Preferences I can set random repeats, but I don't know if that will fix it. I can't check it now because I have it on my computer at school. You can make your own short questions or use it for vocabulary drill. I have made a vocab list for each chapter. It's great to use at the end of the period The kids love it. Check out all of the software options at: web site: http://home.comcast.net/~pqboom/ Lukas, S. Random name generator. Title: Article: Essential Learnings - New Australian curriculum
Body: Article address: http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/08/02/ 1091298615066.html?oneclick=true From the article: The first big changes in a decade are on the way for the Victorian school curriculum. From the beginning of next year, there will be a new approach to what students learn, how they are assessed, the standards they must meet and how their progress is reported. Traditional subjects such as maths and English won't disappear, nor will they dominate. The new framework, known as "Essential Learnings", will group these subjects as "core knowledge" and give equal importance to personal and social development, and to skills with wide application, such as reasoning and problem solving.

Title: More on Acadia
Body: On the middle school level as well as high school, I would envision an interdisciplinary unit on the Acadians with the teachers of Social Studies. The story of the Acadians' deportation (Le Grand Dérangement) is not well known. As 2005 marks the 250th anniversary of Le Grand Dérangement it would be quite topical. As some of its incidents are considered to be genocide, there would also be a link to Holocaust studies. The survival of the Acadians in Louisiana is one of the great stories of history. On the high school level a reading of the poem Evangeline could be coupled with a study of the contents of the lyrics of the song Evangeline. Those AATF members who attended our recent convention in Atlanta were fortunate enough to see Zachary Richard perform in person. There are two videos available with M. Richard recounting the Acadian experience. The English version is called “Against the Tide” and the French version, which is a bit different from the English one, is “Contre vents contre marées”. The AATF is in negotiations with Mr. Richard to produce a teaching packet based on Contre vents, contre marées. The videos are available through his website at http://zacharyrichard.com or through http://www.archambault.ca. I would also recommend the following songs which deal with the Acadians, Le Grand Dérangement and Louisiana: Cap Enragé - Zachary Richard Réveille – Zachary Richard French No More – Zachary Richard Ma Louisiane – Zachary Richard Chanter ma vie - Wilfred Lebouthillier Briser les murs- Lennie Gallant L’Acadie En Chanson – Artistes variés Evangeline - Carolyne Jomphe (CD De l'Acadie à la Côte-Nord (1998), http://www.carolynejomphe.qc.ca Join the AATF Vive l’Acadie !
