Title: Motivating students to use target language
Body: I haven't done this for 2-3 years, but I used to to use this method with a lot of success: I had a candle for every section. I'd light it at the beginning of the class period and for as long as Spanish is spoken during the class period,it remains lit. When the candle burns out, we have a party or some other voted upon reward. It serves as a nice visual motivation. I remind the students that sometimes it will be me that blows the candle out if I feel we really need to clarify some issues. I have 7th and 8th grade and have only done it with the 8th grade. Some modifications might have to be made at the beginning of a level one course -- or the candle simply needs to be smaller! Of course, I know there are issues of being able to use a candle in some schools -- so perhaps for those that have continual computer projection can use a countdown time that has been set for 6 hours or there could even be a picture on the board with a stopwatch on the side and these minute totals could be charted. Most of my kids really got into the whole deal and really helped each other out. Rundquist, J. 100% target language. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Reading packets with computer projector
Body: I use packets in my class. I keep two copies of the packets... the original or clean" copy and a copy for the projection device. When we are using any of the activities out of the packet, I use the projection device. I enlarge the document to something over 100% so all the kids can see. I use the highlighter function to show them what I want them to highlight. This has almost completely eliminated my need for overheads (which in my building are a pain to make... far away... often out of supply... long lines... I hate cleaning them, etc.). I know this isn't a "glamorous" idea but it really works well. When doing a reading together, I often highlight in one color, phrases that IMHO a typical student at their level should know. I'll use another highlighter color for phrases or structures that I want to point out to them and another color to point out usage of any grammatical concept we're studying. I tell the kids to just read the "orange" words. I ask them to ignore everything else. They are pleased with how much they understand already without getting bogged down on the 20% that they don't understand. Then we try to figure out some of the non-highlighted words from context. I keep www.wordreference.com open, so we can look words up together. This helps with their dictionary skills. I do an extensive lesson using www.wordrefence.com in the fall and I like being able to review it throughout the year. Pento, A. Re: advice on projector use. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv.
