Title | More on Acadia |
Body | On the middle school level as well as high school, I would envision an interdisciplinary unit on the Acadians with the teachers of Social Studies. The story of the Acadians' deportation (Le Grand Dérangement) is not well known. As 2005 marks the 250th anniversary of Le Grand Dérangement it would be quite topical. As some of its incidents are considered to be genocide, there would also be a link to Holocaust studies. The survival of the Acadians in Louisiana is one of the great stories of history. On the high school level a reading of the poem Evangeline could be coupled with a study of the contents of the lyrics of the song Evangeline. Those AATF members who attended our recent convention in Atlanta were fortunate enough to see Zachary Richard perform in person. There are two videos available with M. Richard recounting the Acadian experience. The English version is called Against the Tide and the French version, which is a bit different from the English one, is Contre vents contre marées. The AATF is in negotiations with Mr. Richard to produce a teaching packet based on Contre vents, contre marées. The videos are available through his website at http://zacharyrichard.com or through http://www.archambault.ca. I would also recommend the following songs which deal with the Acadians, Le Grand Dérangement and Louisiana: Cap Enragé - Zachary Richard Réveille Zachary Richard French No More Zachary Richard Ma Louisiane Zachary Richard Chanter ma vie - Wilfred Lebouthillier Briser les murs- Lennie Gallant LAcadie En Chanson Artistes variés Evangeline - Carolyne Jomphe (CD De l'Acadie à la Côte-Nord (1998), http://www.carolynejomphe.qc.ca Join the AATF Vive lAcadie !
