Title: Job Posting: HS & MS Spanish teacher, PA
Body: Our district still has a one year Spanish position open. It is 3 classes of high school Spanish III and a 6 sections of Intermediate School Spanish (3 classes a day-they meet a semester only, a new group in Jan). I am fairly certain the IS is all 8th graders so the teacher will only have 2 preps and 6 classes (standard in our district). Both Sp I and III use En Espanol series. The teacher would have his/her own room. The buildings are joined together and on same bell schedule so HS kids will walk over to the IS for Spanish ( a system we've done sucessfully for a few years). Must have PA certification. We are in southeastern PA. We are 40 miles west of Phila, about 15 miles east of Lancaster, 20 miles north of Wilmington, DE. We are in western Chester County and eastern Lancaster County. School is located in Atglen, PA. It is a full-time position for one year. I am on sabbatical and the person who was in this position moved to fulltime HS for one year to cover my sabbatical. There is a possibility it would be half time or fulltime the following year. Interested parties should contact Mrs. Betsy Harned, Intermediate School Principal, at bharned@octorara.org Curiel, J. (28 Jul. 2004). Spanish position open PA. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (30 Jul. 2004).

Title: Book Review: La grammaire est une chanson douce
Body: I'm taking two French classes this summer - just for fun (I teach Spanish and Italian) and it's interesting to be on the "other side of the desk" for a change. Anyhow, in one of my classes we're reading La grammaire est une chanson douce by Erik Orsenna. I highly recommend it, especially chapters 17 & 18 for a wonderful look at grammar and the various parts of speech! (I believe it's also available in English.) Tuttle, L. (28 Jul. 2004). Title: National Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics convening
Body: Editor's Note: I don't know if this task force has already formed or not, but I thought the information might be of use to some. During the summer of 2004, the National Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics will be established to identify major issues in early childhood education for Hispanic children in the United States and to make recommendations for action. Launched with a grant from the Foundation for Child Development, the task force will focus on the educational needs of Hispanic children from birth through the primary grades. The task force's chair will be Dr. Eugene E. Garcia, Dean of the College of Education and Vice President for School-University Partnerships at Arizona State University (ASU). Members of the task force, which is to be housed at ASU, will include policymakers, practitioners, corporate, community, strategic thinkers, researchers, and educators of early childhood educators and teachers. The task force will be convened for an initial period of two years, at the end of which time it will issue a major report on its findings and recommendations for action. It is projected that the task force would meet once per year, with the initial meeting planned for the Fall, 2004. The task force is being created for several reasons. Available evidence indicates that the much lower levels of academic achievement in high school and college of Hispanic students compared to Whites and Asian Americans are heavily related to the large differences in achievement that exist at the end of the primary grades. Moreover, the lower levels of achievement of Hispanics in the primary grades are related in part to substantial differences in school readiness at the beginning of kindergarten between Hispanics and their White and Asian counterparts. Thus, there is a pressing need to improve educational outcomes and share these outcomes with the greater community, including an emphasis in the Latino community. For further information contact: Eugene E. Garcia, Ph. D., eugene.garcia@asu.edu Villanueva, A. (29 Jul. 2004). National Task Force on Early Childhood Education for Hispanics. (30 Jul 2004). Title: Lesson Plan: Eliciting questions
Body: Editor's note: A method of eliciting questions applicable to any language class... A flexible class I use when faced with a group that I know little or nothing about goes like this: Aim: to elicit grammatically correct question-forms to act as an ice-breaker for a new group Level: pre-intermediate upwards 1. Teacher starts by introducing him/herself by name then (spontaneously!) hesitates saying something along the lines of having done so many 'first classes' is bored with the format. Introduce new format: teacher answers question FIRST and the group have to ask the (grammatically) correct question. Start fairly simply with an 'answer' like 'Yes, I have a dog', hopefully eliciting 'Have you got a pet?' 2. Once the group feel confident move onto 'answers' like 'I'd love to go, but it's a bit expensive this year' and you may get a question like 'Are you going to England this year?'. 3. Having got through your prepared list of (12) progressively difficult 'answers', reverse roles and ask your group to write their own 'answers' about themselves. This can be done individually or in pairs. 4. After writing their 'answers' on the blackboard it is your turn to ask the question. Again hesitate and appeal to the rest of the group for help. Write up the proposed questions, discussing which form is most appropriate. There are only 2 rules for this class, all 'questions' must be grammatically correct for the 'answer', and you have to accept ANY question which fits, so be careful with answers like 'Only on Sundays'!! Title: Request for Spanish language contacts
Body: I am designing a project for my college-level Spanish phonetics class in which I would like my students to participate in live voice chats with native Spanish speakers from different backgrounds - to experience first-hand dialectal differences in pronunciations, etc. I'm looking for contacts in Sp- speaking countries, ideally college level and preferrably with some technological capabilities (ie a tech university, etc.)to engage in one-time meetings with my classes. I've looked through key-pal type organization lists, but can't find much. Do any of you have contacts abroad or ideas about who I can get in touch with? I appreciate any help - you can email me at glord@ufl.edu. Thank you! Gillian Lord Gillian Lord Ward, Ph.D. Asst.
