The University of Utah’s Second Language Teaching and Research Center (L2TReC) and the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) are excited to host the Fifth International Conference on Dual Language/Immersion Education, to be held at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah, October 15-18, 2014. The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, administrators and policy makers interested in immersion education. In addition to plenaries, symposia and presentations, attendees will be able to visit Utah dual language immersion schools and participate in professional workshops.

The mentoring program is designed to help early career language teachers succeed in their current assignments and learn the skills to be successful long-term in their careers. Mentoring will be conducted virtually. Mentors and mentees will be matched by needs, skills, and experiences.

 Mentees who successfully complete the program can earn 2 CEUs through George Mason University!
 Mentors will be entered into a raffle for 1 year of free ACTFL Membership!

The Mentoring Program will run from September 2014 through May 2015.

[C]ities in Asia Society's Global Cities Education Network (GCEN) recently convened in Shanghai to share ideas on how urban school districts can scale up effective professional learning for teachers. Using Shanghai as a case study, teams of teachers, school, and district leaders from Hong Kong, Houston, Seattle, Singapore, and Shanghai identified professional development practices and policies proven to build teachers' capacity and improve student learning. The discussion produced a core set of strategies that help define what districts can do to create an effective system of professional learning for teachers.

Title: Online Arabic Interactive Storybook "Dunia fi Lubnan"

“Dunia Fi Lubnan” is an unique online Arabic interactive storybook developed by Alef,b… multicultural center for children with support from Qatar Foundation International through a Curriculum Development grant.

“Dunia Fi Lubnan” is an integrated educational material in that it uses both Modern Standard Arabic, الفصحى and colloquial العامية .

It is appropriate for Arabic heritage students as well as for learners whose native language is English. In the latter case, it is recommended to use the ISB with the assistance of a native person in order to best enjoy the content. The target age group is 7 years old and up.

This material is composed of a fully illustrated interactive story, comprehension quiz questions prompted by Nahla the bee in English, playful drills to test reading, writing and comprehension, and cultural games from which the learner can accumulate points to earn a surprise gift from Alefb.

Title: 2014 Dora Johnson Award for Arabic Teachers

The ACTFL Arabic SIG, in partnership with QFI, is pleased to announce that applications for the 2014 Dora Johnson Awards are now open. Awards will provide funding for Arabic educators in the amount of $1,000 to support attendance at the 2014 ACTFL Convention in San Antonio, Texas from November 21 to 23. The Awards are named for the late Dora Johnson, a lifelong supporter of Arabic language education.

Applicants must be K-12 Arabic teachers or administrators and members of both ACTFL and the Arabic SIG (or committed to joining both). Preference will be given according to the following criteria, in descending order:

* First-time attendees
* First-time presenters
* Presenters
* Presenters who have received a Dora Johnson Award in the past

The exhibition Noh Theatre in the Woodblock Prints of Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869 - 1927) will feature over 50 unique woodblock prints of Noh and Kyōgen theatre scenes, from the collection of Richard J. and Mae J. Smethurst, as well as authentic Noh masks provided by local collectors. Tsukioka Kōgyo became one of the most famous and internationally celebrated print artists of the Meiji Period in Japanese history. He was, and remains, the preeminent artist of Noh (and Kyōgen) theatre. Between the 1890s and his death in 1927, Kōgyo produced five major sets of prints. The prints in the exhibition not only showcase his incredible artistic talent but also a popular form of theatre for audiences in Japan.

Are you a K-12 teacher of German or a graduate student teaching assistant in your first three years of teaching? Interested in attending your first AATG/ACTFL Convention? Apply for funds to travel to San Antonio for the AATG Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the ACTFL Annual Convention and World Languages Expo from November 21‒23! AATG members may apply for a stipend to cover conference registration and $275 in travel expenses.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
•    be a member of AATG
•    be a first-time attendee at an AATG Annual Meeting / ACTFL Convention and World Languages Expo
•    be a new teacher of German (in your first three years of teaching)
