Title: Blog Post: Supporting ELT or ESOL students with Aspergers
Body:

From http://elt-resourceful.com

Teacher Rachael Roberts writes,

“If you work with people with more severe forms of autism you probably already know plenty about how to support them , but many, often highly intelligent, people have traits of ASD without ever realising it. What they do realise is that life, and by extension learning in a classroom setting, is just that bit harder for them.

“I’m by no means an expert on all of this, but since my son was diagnosed a few years back, my awareness has grown significantly and I realise how under-prepared/informed I think many language teachers are (me included). Looking back, I can remember quite a few students that I would now recognise as probably having been on the autistic spectrum, and I now know that there are a lot of things I could have handled differently and more successfully.”

Ultimately, participants will design instruction that aligns content and language standards, teaching methods, and student assessment in secondary science classrooms.

The course will take place July 7- August 3. For full details go to http://www.tesol.org/attend-and-learn/online-courses-seminars/esl-for-the-secondary-science-teacher

Inspiring students with learning disabilities to take up a language
With a different approach, language lessons for students with special education can be inclusive, exciting and relevant
by Martin Williams
June 20, 2014

Every year thousands of language learners struggle with the additional challenge of a learning disability. In England alone, there are more than 229,000 school students with special education needs (Sen), with many going on to successfully take qualifications in French, Spanish and German.

Retired special needs teacher David Wilson says: "Even those who are suffering from learning difficulties in the purest sense, if you delve deeply enough, you'll always find there's a real spark in there."

Sen covers a wide range of learning disabilities, from mild dyslexia to severe, non-verbal autism. "There's not a one size fits all approach for teaching languages to Sen students," says Wilson. "You have to look for the strengths rather than worrying too much about the weaknesses."

Title: Blog Post: Getting the Most out of a Matching Activity
Body:

From http://martinabex.com

Teacher Martina Bex writes,

“Matching activities are an easy way to review content through comprehensible input. However, no student wakes up in the morning thinking, “I hope that we do a matching activity in class today!” They are boring, and many students can pound them out in a few seconds flat.”

Read the full blog post at http://martinabex.com/2014/06/22/cada-oveja-con-su-pareja to see how you can make matching activities cute, comprehensible, and challenging.
