Title: Ideas for Strengthening English Skills over the Summer
Body:

From http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk

Ideas for strengthening English skills over the summer
by Larry Ferlazzo
July 8, 2014

As I’ve done in the past, … I have created a virtual classrooms at a number of sites where students can easily enroll and do online activities. They will receive “extra credit” for doing so — either from me (since many will have me as a teacher again next year) or from their new teachers (who have agreed to give them extra credit).

Most of the sites are specifically for English Language Learners but, this year, I’ve also expanded to a few more advanced sites that would be more appropriate for many advanced ELLs and mainstream ninth-graders who are entering tenth-grade. In addition, a few other teachers of other mainstream classes invited their students to participate, as well. One great thing about most of these sites is that once the classrooms are set-up, it doesn’t really make any difference if 3 or 100 enroll.

Read on for Mr. Ferlazzo’s description of different online learning sites that your students can also use: http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/blogs/larry-ferlazzo/larry-ferlazzo-ideas-strengthening-english-skills-over-summer

Title: Workshop: Learn To Teach ESL Drama
Body:

Learn to Teach ESL Drama Overseas and Locally!
July 26th-27th 2014- New York City: All Levels 1/2 + Refresher, 12 Hour Workshop:

By the end of all our TESOL Drama workshops you will:
-Improve pedagogical and communication skills through methodologies such as the Theatre of the Oppressed.
-Learn how to teach your students through dramatic activities.
-Learn how to devise a play which in turn can be taught to students.
-Learn specific drama techniques which will make you a more engaging teacher and performer
-Have a certificate of completion/professional developments credits for teaching drama.

TESOL Drama Workshop Descriptions:
Level 1: The primary focus of our workshop is to improve communication through the practice of drama, which is useful for English, language, TESOL, and theatre teachers as well as performing artists. Our facilitator identifies the goals and needs of each of the participants, then leads them through dramatic activities, games, and improvisational exercises that create a forum for reflection, catharsis, and discussion which address the identified questions regarding their practice. Participants are then guided through collaborative group activities where they create scenes, monologues, short plays, and lesson plans using the tools they have been given. Skills taken from this workshop include: the practice and teaching of vocal work, learning to create and think on your feet, teaching and engaging in creative group collaboration, practicing cultural sensitivity, and using drama to better communicate ideas. Career options and practical applications of this work will also be explored and discussed.

Level 2: This will be a multimedia workshop focussing on drama and other art forms as a means of communication for the teaching and learning of other languages. There will be advanced activities in acting and playwrighting while also incorporating creative activities in music and visual arts. The collaborative learning approach will be explored within performance and curriculum contexts. Cultural and place-based education methods will also be explored (using the arts, culture, and your immediate environment in curriculum). There will also be a discussion on career options and implementation.
