Title: Latino Parents Decry Bilingual Programs

Klein to follow through on their pledges to improve an entrenched program by improving teacher training and oversight. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/14/education/14educ.html

Title: Test review strategies
Body: I did something this year that I never thought I would do, and it worked very well. I set up centers around the room with different activities at each one. I divided the class into groups of 4-6 (depending on the size of the class) and pushed the desks together. On each set of desks I put either a set of flashcards, conversation cards, a tape recorder with headphones plugged in and listening activity sheets, a reading with some questions, and the last station was my computer, where I had them do Quia activities related to the unit. You could make up other activities and make more centers, depending on what the test is like. I tried to have one center for each different type of test question. It's better to have more centers and fewer students per group. They would stay at each center for about 10 minutes, then I would direct them to move on to the next center, and give about 2-3 minutes to get settled in to the next center. Since we are on block scheduling, this worked perfectly, with time at the beginning for me to explain, and time at the end for questions. But you could do this in shorter classes, by either shortening the time at each station, or doing it over 2 days. Ben, A. (8 Jul. 2004). Re: test review strategies for middle school Spanish. Title: Using songs in Spanish class
Body: I am writing a Spanish V (standard college prep) curriculum which will dramatically differ from our Honors and AP courses in that it will use music and film as a point of departure for all four language skills. Currently, I am compiling songs with a strong narrative which I can use for both listening and reading comrehension. To date this is the list I have come up with (thanks to many of you who, over the years, have shared your choices on this list serve: Hijo de la luna (Mecano) La extraña pareja (Ismael Serrano) El corrido del caballo blanco (José Alfredo Jiménez or Ruben Blades) Pobre Juan (Maná) El y ella (Ricardo Arjona) Canción infantil (José Luis Perales) Matador (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs) Manuel Santillan, EL Leon (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs) Penelope (Joan Manuel Serrat or Diego Torres) El muelle de San Blas (Maná) Laika (Mecano) El reloj cucu (Maná) La historia de Juan (Juanes) El super héroe (Vico C) El capitán y la sirena (Ruben Blades) Pedro Navaja (Ruben Blades or Chayanne) El chico del apartamento 5-12 (Selena) Alfonsina y el mar (Mercedes Sosa) Luis (Franco De Vita) The following songs are probably not appropriate for most high school students as they deal with controversial themes. I would, however, consider using these with my seniors. El gran varón (Willie Colón) Se quiere, se mata (Shakira). Ana (Maná) Watson, G. (7 Jul. 2004). Spanish Songs that Tell a Story. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (16 Jul. 2004). ---------- Comments from list members: You've compiled an outstanding list of songs for your students. One that you might consider adding is "El corrido de Gregorio Cortez", which was made into a movie starring Edward James Olmos. A word of caution with "El reloj cucu". . . . It has a child abuse theme, something that might affect some students in a melancholy way. ----------- I would add "Y nos dieron las diez" by Joaquín Sabina. It has an adult theme, but I have used it successfully with my seniors; I teach in a suburban, public high school.

Title: Kafka site
Body: The Austrian-Jewish author Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883. Before his early death at the age of 40 he wrote The Trial, "Metamorphosis," and the many other classics of German literature that he is famous for today. But if Kafka's wishes had actually been carried out, none of his novels and stories would be known today and the term "Kafkaesque" would not even exist. http://german.about.com/library/blkafka.htm

Title: High tech flash cards
Body: If you're looking for a good flash card program, I highly recommend Vocab 1.9.1 (shareware, Mac & Windows, $18). It doesn't allow clip art, but it has a lot of good reviewing features, including the ability to record audio. But the best thing, by far, is Vocab Scheduler, which allows you to create a custom schedule of review sessions, so that when it's time to review, a message pops up on your computer to remind you! http://www.cabsoft.com/download.html Andrews, B.
