ORTESOL 2004: "BUILDING BRIDGES: CONNECTING CULTURES"

As language teachers, we encourage our students to venture into an
unfamiliar and complex linguistic world. As we help them connect, we
continually rebuild our own connections with our learners, our colleagues and
our community.

The ORTESOL 2004 Conference is a great opportunity to broaden your
professional horizons by connecting with colleagues and experts in the field,
and by sharing your knowledge as a presenter. The day-and-a-half long
conference is scheduled for Friday afternoon, November 5th and Saturday,
November 6th, with Friday devoted to workshops and Saturday to concurrent
sessions. The site is Saint Mary's Academy in downtown Portland, adjacent
to the PSU campus and close to the I-5 freeway and many hotels and
restaurants.

Saturday presentations will feature concurrent sessions and panel
discussions on topics ranging from classroom management to various
practical learning activities to political legislation, in K-12, Adult and Higher
Education settings. Approximately twenty major publishers will show their
latest offerings in a brighter and more spacious location on the top floor, with
book giveaways throughout the day. Special interest groups will meet at
lunch-time for networking.

Conference Fee Waived for Presenters

If you are interested in making a presentation at the Fall Conference, please
fill out the Call for Papers (proposal) form which is included in this newsletter.
The deadline for submissions is July 31st. Note that two presenters per
session will be admitted to the conference free. (All presenters are still
expected to pay ORTESOL membership dues: $20.00 for full-time
professionals, $15.00 for part-time professionals). Please call Mary Stevens,
(503) 244-6111, x3939, or email with questions or presentation suggestions.
