TitleUsing songs in Spanish class
Body
I am writing a Spanish V (standard college prep) curriculum which will
dramatically differ from our Honors and AP courses in that it will use music
and film as a point of departure for all four language skills. Currently, I am
compiling songs with a strong narrative which I can use for both listening and
reading comrehension. To date this is the list I have come up with (thanks to
many of you who, over the years, have shared your choices on this list serve:

Hijo de la luna (Mecano)
La extraña pareja (Ismael Serrano)
El corrido del caballo blanco (José Alfredo Jiménez or Ruben Blades)
Pobre Juan (Maná)
El y ella (Ricardo Arjona)
Canción infantil (José Luis Perales)
Matador (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs)
Manuel Santillan, EL Leon (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs)
Penelope (Joan Manuel Serrat or Diego Torres)
El muelle de San Blas (Maná)
Laika (Mecano)
El reloj cucu (Maná)
La historia de Juan (Juanes)
El super héroe (Vico C)
El capitán y la sirena (Ruben Blades)
Pedro Navaja (Ruben Blades or Chayanne)
El chico del apartamento 5-12 (Selena)
Alfonsina y el mar (Mercedes Sosa)
Luis (Franco De Vita)

The following songs are probably not appropriate for most high school
students as they deal with controversial themes. I would, however, consider
using these with my seniors.

El gran varón (Willie Colón)
Se quiere, se mata (Shakira).
Ana (Maná)

Comments from list members:
You've compiled an outstanding list of songs for your students. One that you
might consider adding is "El corrido de Gregorio Cortez", which was made
into a movie starring Edward James Olmos.

A word of caution with "El reloj cucu". . . . It has a child abuse theme,
something that might affect some students in a melancholy way.

I would add "Y nos dieron las diez" by Joaquín Sabina. It has an adult
theme, but I have used it successfully with my seniors; I teach in a suburban,
public high school.
