The Center for Language Education and Research will be offering four workshops this summer:

The Basics of Creating Assessments: From Principles to Practice
July 14-16, 2014

Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning: Introductory Techniques
July 17-19, 2014

Speaking Activities for Oral Proficiency Development
July 21-23, 2014

Using Authentic Materials in all Levels of Foreign Language Classes
July 24-26, 2014

Detailed descriptions, travel and hotel information, and more can be found on the CLEAR website: http://clear.msu.edu/clear/professionaldev/summerworkshops.php

The early application deadline (application fee waived) is May 16 and the regular deadline is June 1.

CLEAR is also very pleased to announce a limited number of stipends, which will be made available to foreign language teachers who wish to attend these workshops. Stipends will be awarded on a sliding scale to language educators who otherwise might not be able to take advantage of our professional development workshops. The number and amount of stipends awarded is dependent on the number of applications received.

Stipends will include a tuition waiver for workshop fees as well as funding that can be used toward travel and accommodations. In accordance with CLEAR's grant mandate, preference will be given to teachers of less commonly taught languages (LCTL). Paired applications from LCTL teachers wishing to attend the workshop on using authentic materials in the classroom (i.e., two teachers of the same language wishing to attend the workshop together) will also be given special consideration. More information on the stipends is available here: http://clear.msu.edu/clear/professionaldev/Stipend-Program-Details_2014.php

Body:

From http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/russian/startalkrussian

STARTALK Institute for Teachers of Russian
Second Language Acquisition and Pedagogy
July 21 - August 5, 2014

The principles of second language acquisition and pedagogy and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century will serve as foundation for this intensive pedagogy program.

The program’s target audience includes graduate students who are starting to teach Russian, as well as teachers at middle and high schools.

Participants will learn how to choose appropriate pedagogical strategies and develop effective teaching and assessment practices that will bring their students to linguistic and cultural proficiency in Russian. The program curriculum will focus on communicative learner-centered instruction, which uses interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication and integrates the five standards (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities).

Participants will also be exposed to the teaching and linguistic expertise of the Middlebury Russian faculty, who will open their classrooms for observations and, as guest lecturers, will lead a series of workshops and seminars. Participants will demonstrate mastery of the material by designing and implementing a number of classroom activities and a final lesson. Participants additionally will benefit from the Russian School’s intensive environment by interacting with students and teachers at cultural events and meals.

Tuition, lodging expenses, meals, textbooks, and classroom materials will be paid by grant funding, and each participant will receive a travel reimbursement for up to $250. Participants will receive one unit of graduate credit.

Title: Book: An Ovid Reader: Selections from Seven Works
Body:

From http://www.bolchazy.com/An-Ovid-Reader-Selections-from-Seven-Works-P3524.aspx

An Ovid Reader: Selections from Seven Works
By Carole E. Newlands
Published by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, Inc.

This Reader’s commentary gives grammatical and syntactical assistance, seasoned with appreciation of the fine points of Ovid’s complex literary style. Latin selections are drawn in part from his elegiac poems and demonstrate the new range of directions for elegy developed by Ovid: not merely love elegy (Amores, and with a fresh epistolary form in Heroides); but also didactic and aetiological elegy (Ars Amatoria, Fasti), each with a twist on expected subject-matter; and exile poetry (Tristia, Epistulae ex Ponto), whose elegiac themes are adapted from earlier poetry to express emotional as well as political meaning after Ovid’s banishment from his beloved Rome. Select passages from the epic Metamorphoses, a brilliant experiment that uses a variety of genres under a unifying theme, fill out the collection with the work acknowledged to be Ovid’s major achievement.
