Title: CASLS Says Farewell to Long-time Staff Member, Krystal Sundstrom by Mandy Gettler, CASLS Associate Director
Body:

CASLS Online Learning Specialist Krystal Sundstrom began working for CASLS in 2007, writing items for many of CASLS' assessments. Since then, Krystal has become the primary expert on LinguaFolio Online. She has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving language education. In that capacity, Krystal has conducted numerous conference presentations and webinars to help educators reap the benefits of formative assessment. After seven years, CASLS staff wish her a reluctant farewell.

"I will miss the people," Krystal says of her departure. "CASLS has such a wonderful crew of interesting, intelligent people with a wide range of interests. I've enjoyed getting to know everyone, and we have a great team doing great work!"

As a result of continued cuts to federal and state funding for foreign languages and timing of grants, CASLS has been unable to renew some staff contracts, including Krystal's. The unreliable nature of public funding is one of the things Krystal will miss the least about CASLS – along with the standard office fluorescent lighting.

Even without her physical presence, Krystal's legacy will live on at CASLS for many years to come. "I have often been impressed with her easygoing demeanor, no matter what the situation," remarks CASLS Instructional Designer Deborah Cooke. "Her ability to network and make connections and alliances is truly amazing!"

Krystal plans to enjoy time with her two children and growing a garden this summer before diving into her doctoral degree. "I'm a teacher at heart. My specific roles may vary, but I always envision myself teaching others."

We have all certainly learned a lot from Krystal these past years, and we wish her the best of luck completing her doctoral degree and finding her dream position that will allow her to continue her role helping others learn.

Title: New Practice Guide: Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School
Body:

Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School is a new practice guide available for free download from the What Works Clearinghouse. This practice guide provides four recommendations that address what works for English learners during reading and content area instruction. Each recommendation includes extensive examples of activities that can be used to support students as they build the language and literacy skills needed to be successful in school. The recommendations also summarize and rate supporting evidence. This guide is geared toward teachers, administrators, and other educators who want to improve instruction in academic content and literacy for English learners in elementary and middle school.

Download the new guide at http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/PracticeGuide.aspx?sid=19

A webinar focusing on the new practice guide will be held on May 1, 2014, 3:00–4:15 p.m. ET. The presenters will cover key recommendations in the areas of academic vocabulary, content-area material, written language, and small-group instructional intervention.

Title: Book: Automated Grammatical Error Detection for Language Learners

Automated Grammatical Error Detection for Language Learners, Second Edition
Synthesis Lectures on Human Language Technologies
By Claudia Leacock, Martin Chodorow, Michael Gamon, and Joel Tetreault
Published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers

This volume describes the types of constructions English language learners find most difficult: constructions containing prepositions, articles, and collocations. It provides an overview of the automated approaches that have been developed to identify and correct these and other classes of learner errors in a number of languages.

Error annotation and system evaluation are particularly important topics in grammatical error detection because there are no commonly accepted standards. Chapters in the book describe the options available to researchers, recommend best practices for reporting results, and present annotation and evaluation schemes.

The final chapters explore recent innovative work that opens new directions for research. It is the authors' hope that this volume will continue to contribute to the growing interest in grammatical error detection by encouraging researchers to take a closer look at the field and its many challenging problems.

Body:

From https://www.equinoxpub.com/journals/index.php/RTCFL/index

In recent years there has been a global upsurge of interest in all aspects of Chinese culture, economy and society and along with this, an increasing demand for instruction in the Chinese language. This new, fully refereed, journal is intended for an international audience of scholars, applied linguists, educators and policy makers engaged with Chinese as a foreign language. It offers a forum for presenting work from a range of linguistic sub-fields related to Chinese linguistics, language pedagogy, second-language acquisition, assessment, teacher training and curriculum design. Teaching and Researching Chinese as a Foreign Language seeks empirical contributions as well as papers that address theoretical and methodological concerns. In additional to articles, the journal publishes book reviews and conference reports. Each issue of this bi-lingual journal will normally include material in both Chinese and English.

This journal will be published in June and December of each year, beginning in 2015.
