Title: Difference Between PARCC and Smarter Balanced Accommodations for English Language Learners

Common-Assessment Groups Differ on Accommodations
But consortia seek more-inclusive experience for ELLs, special ed. students
By Liana Heitin
April 21, 2014

The common-core tests being developed by two state coalitions offer the promise of more inclusion and self-sufficiency for students with special needs and for English-language learners. At the same time, some acutely different decisions each group has made on test administration and accessibility features mean the testing experience for students in those special populations will vary widely depending on the state they call home.

Most notably, the use of glossaries and the often-controversial topic of read-aloud accommodations get dissimilar treatment by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, and the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.

Chinese Language Learning 2.0
by Eloise Jones

For students of Chinese looking to augment a central text, there are dozens of mobile tools, applications, games, podcasts, and software ready to fill in the gaps. Last month we launched a new mobile website with lesson ideas and resources, China and Globalization. Both students and teachers are digging into the content. They tell us they find the interactive flashcards to be particularly useful.

This feedback has us thinking: What else is working in Chinese language learning? Following is a sampling of unique, new, or otherwise trending tools.

Title: Irish Immersion Weekend in New York
Body:

From http://www.daltai.com/shop/products.php?product=Irish-Immersion-Weekend-%252d-May-9-to-11%2C-2014

Immersion Course in The Irish Language
Friday, May 9th through Sunday, May 11th, 2014
Marist Brothers Retreat Center
Esopus, NY

Gaeltacht Weekends were established in 1981 to provide a setting where students can learn and practice the Irish Language in an atmosphere where Irish is the "First" language. The name Gaeltacht refers to the regions in Ireland where Irish is the predominant language.

Though most participants have been studying for longer periods of time, those with little or no prior knowledge are also welcome.

The only requirements are a desire to learn, a commitment to use whatever Irish you do have, and a willingness to comply with the rule: Irish will be spoken by all, at all times, to the best of one's ability. Language classes will be held and are mandatory.

Workshops in Irish music, singing and céilí dancing will also be offered. Bring your musical instruments. There will be a céilí Saturday night.
