Title: English-language Researcher/Practitioner Grant Program
Body: From http://www.ets.org/toefl/grants/el_researcher_practitioner_grant TOEFL announces the second annual TOEFL English-language Researcher/Practitioner Grant program. The purpose of the program is to enable practitioners to become involved in ETS's efforts to promote English language learning and to support education and professional development for English-language teachers worldwide through ETS's assessments and services. The specific goal for the program this year is to compile data from diverse language learning contexts and to summarize these data in order to better understand the complexities of English language learning and teaching. The grantees will be asked to investigate changes in English-proficiency levels in relation to teaching and learning in a particular context by administering the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL ITP test both before and after an instructional period. If needed, ETS will provide support in the quantitative analysis of the data and interpretation of the results. Successful applicants will receive funding of US$5,000–$10,000. November 1, 2013 — Deadline for receipt of application materials For full details go to http://www.ets.org/toefl/grants/el_researcher_practitioner_grant

Title: Blended Language Learning from Middlebury College
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/on_innovation/2013/09/blended_language_learning_boosts_global_competence.html Blended Language Learning Boosts Global Competence By Tom Vander Ark September 27, 2013 Middlebury Interactive , a joint venture between Middlebury College and K12 Inc., is a leader in world language instruction for K-12 students. The partnership will serve about 200,000 K-12 students this year in more than 1,200 traditional and virtual schools. The most frequent application is in a blended learning environment. Language courses are offered in Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Latin. Elementary courses build a solid language foundation. Middle and high school courses focus on development of the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Middlebury also offers customizable Fluency Courses that can be structured for a fully online, blended or traditional classroom implementation. The platform blends immersive gaming, social networking and multimedia interactive learning. Videos have been shot around the world--the French courses were shot in France, Canada, Senegal and Guadeloupe taping real people interacting in a real cultural environment. Task based activities use authentic documents and encourage students to make hypotheses about how the language works. Title: Help “Refresh” World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages
Body: From http://www.actfl.org/publications/all/national-standards-foreign-language-education/refreshed-world-readiness-standards You are invited to provide comments to help “refresh” our national standards: World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. On behalf of the Standards Collaborative Board, ACTFL is facilitating the process to update our common national standards. The document reflects the current educational landscape, including Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness, 21st century skills, as well as what language educators have learned from more than 15 years of implementing the Standards. Based on consensus from all levels of language educators, the five goal areas and the eleven standards have been maintained. The proposed revisions seek to clarify and better illustrate each goal area and standard in order to guide implementation and influence assessment, curriculum, and instruction. Access the feedback form, where you will see the original and revised version of the standards for each goal area. You may provide general/overarching feedback as well as more specific comments under each goal area. The deadline for feedback and comments is October 25, 2013. Body: From http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/languageroadmap The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, with strong interest from the state of Hawai‘i’s Governor’s office, is coordinating the Hawai‘i Language Roadmap Initiative. The goal is to implement a roadmap for change –in education, in business, in state and county government, and in the community– to help build the future multilingual workforce of Hawai‘i. Title: Article: Immersed in the Umatilla Language
Body: From http://www.eastoregonian.com/news/local_news/immersed-in-the-umatilla/article_1c6f9dd0-2b1e-11e3-98da-001a4bcf887a.html Immersed in the Umatilla By NATALIE WHEELER October 1, 2013 Four hours every weekday morning, 10 toddlers at Tamalúut Immersion School dive into the Umatilla language. Tamalúut means just that — to immerse in water. Some of the three- to five-year olds cling to the edge, talking back to the language teachers in English, while a few jump into Umatilla and chat away with peers. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation school is designed around accelerated language acquisition, said Tamalúut teacher Modesta Minthorn-Wolahts, who wrote the grant to begin the program last year. A similar program began in Hawaii, and was later adopted for Native American languages in Montana and Wyoming. Read the full article at http://www.opb.org/news/article/immersed-in-the-umatilla
