Title: ELL Advocates Call for PARCC Tests in Spanish
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/learning-the-language/2013/08/ell_advocates_call_for_parcc_t.html ELL Advocates Call for PARCC Tests in Spanish By Lesli A. Maxwell August 5, 2013 A tricky issue facing both groups of states designing common tests for English/language arts and mathematics is whether to make native-language assessments available for students who are still learning English. Neither the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) nor the Smarter Balanced consortia has publicly announced what it will do about native-language translations of the new tests. Both groups have member states with vastly different approaches to testing English-language learners. Arizona, for example, is an "English-only" member state in PARCC, while a fellow member, New York, requires that assessments be made available in multiple languages for students still learning English. But now, a national civil rights organization, the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, has weighed in and asked PARCC to develop Spanish-language assessments in both English/language arts and math. Title: More Beginning of School Ideas
Body: Last week we shared a few beginning of school ideas and resources. Here are some more: --- Angela from Sheboygan Falls Middle School in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, describes the following: I do a scavenger hunt for Spanish 1 kids but I have them find things around the room that might be different from a traditional English classroom. It also helps make them more comfortable in the room and where things are. Things like... Can they figure out the date in Spanish? (It is written on the board). Can they find anything different about the Spanish calendar in the classroom? (Starts on a Monday...) Can they find the days weather (It is on the weather chart in Spanish) Can they figure out how to ask "May I go to the bathroom" (also posted on the wall) Can they find the recycling and how to say "paper, plastic and garbage" in Spanish (the containers are labeled) Does your teacher have kids? (pictures on my desk...) Can they find the daily learning objectives (they are also posted on the board in a special place) etc. Re: [nandu] FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL - HIGH SCHOOL SPANISH. Improving Early Language Programs listserv (nandu@caltalk.cal.org, 7 Aug 2013). --- An FLTEACH listserv user suggests the following activity with cognates: I think there is great value in spending a lesson on cognates at the very beginning to activate what students already CAN DO with their chosen language. I'm for anything that lowers the anxiety and makes the students feel "smart" in those first days with their "new" language. It's like the "K" of a KWL activity..... For the opening activity of my cognate lesson … is to put up a slide with the Spanish translation of the pledge to the flag. On showing the slide, I instruct students to raise their hand when they recognize these familiar sentences (but don't say anything). Then, I help them identify the words that helped them figure it out. I read it out loud. Let them repeat it with me. Then you can move on to another cognate activity if you want. Make categories and have pairs of students brainstorm words of Spanish origin they already know. Categories can include foods, place names, geographical terms, people, animals etc. You can give a sample in each category to get the juices flowing (enchilada, Nevada, río, señorita, coyote). Pairs can share their words out loud or go around and write them on chart papers around the room by categories. You can finish up by showing various groups of cognates - ask students to illustrate the words to show meaning and creating some basic rules for recognizing cognates (-ty = -dad), etc. … Most good texts or references have great lists of cognates. Heller, B. Re: [FLTEACH] Cognates - Spanish. FLTEACH listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 1 Aug 2013). --- Another FLTEACH listserv user uses a treasure hunt: I send them on a "treasure hunt" where they have to introduce themselves to the custodians (2), the lunch ladies (3), the teachers working lunch duty, two secretaries, the school nurse and two principals. The adults in my building are very supportive, they all know it's coming and the first years have moments of shared pain with their classmates. Often I notice my other levels helping them out too. It is a great ice breaker and they get to know some behind the scenes people. Their treasure hunt paper has a script on it, and blanks for the people greeted to sign off. It's their first grade of the year (10 points) and they seem to really enjoy it. I'll assign it on our first day and they have until Friday to complete the grid. Freeman, J. Re: [FLTEACH] Encouraging students to participate. FLTEACH listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 8 Aug 2013). The handout and a copy of an email for staff are available for free download on the Teachers Pay Teachers website at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spanish-1-welcome-activity-to-meet-staffstaff-treasure-hunt-820058

Title: Book: The Second Language Acquisition of French Tense, Aspect, Mood and Modality
Body: From http://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/aals.10/main The Second Language Acquisition of French Tense, Aspect, Mood and Modality By Dalila Ayoun Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company Temporal-aspectual systems have a great potential of informing our understanding of the developing competence of second language learners. So far, the vast majority of empirical studies investigating L2 acquisition have largely focused on past temporality, neglecting the acquisition of the expression of the present and future temporalities with rare exceptions (aside from ESL learners), leaving unanswered the question of how the investigation of different types of temporality may inform our understanding of the acquisition of temporal, aspectual and mood systems as a whole. This monograph addresses this question by focusing on three main objectives: a) to contribute to the already impressive body of research in the L2 acquisition of tense, aspect and mood/modality from a generative perspective, and in so doing to present a more complete picture of the processes of L2 acquisition in general; b) to bridge the gap between linguistic theory and L2 acquisition; c) to make empirical findings more accessible to language instructors by proposing concrete pedagogical applications. Title: Call for Presentations: Student-Led Sign Language Conference
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/24/24-3275.html SL2Hub-DC: Student-Led Sign Language Conference 27-Mar-2014 - 29-Mar-2014 Washington, DC SL2Hub-DC is an interdisciplinary, student led conference on Sign Language hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. The official language of the conference is ASL. This conference has a bit of traditional and a bit of unique. Half of the conference will follow the traditional format with student researchers presenting about their own data. Students giving presentations will describe their methods of analysis, preliminary findings, and the significance for their fields of study. There will also be a poster session where additional students can showcase their research. The other half of the conference will take a less formal tone, focusing on the student learning process. Workshops and these presentations will focus on one data set. Because everyone can become familiar with the data prior to the conference, more in-depth conversations about the process and findings can take place during the weekend. This conference's data set is Wayne Betts Jr.'s Ted Talk, 'Deaf Lens' available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocbyS9-3jjM. Students giving presentations about the shared data set will also describe their methods of analysis, preliminary findings, and the significance for their fields of study. Students leading workshops will present challenges faced by their discipline in analyzing ASL data and facilitate discussions amongst students for us all to grow in our studies together. Wayne Betts Jr. will also attend the conference and looks forward to the discussions. Call Deadline: 30-Sep-2013 For more information visit the conference website at https://sites.google.com/site/sl2hubdc

Title: Call for Papers: Online Language Teaching Research
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/24/24-3263.html Online Language Teaching Research: Pedagogical, Academic and Institutional Issues CALL FOR PAPERS The editors invite submissions of original, research-based scholarship for a peer-reviewed volume on online language teaching. Submissions may focus on any aspect related to the development and implementation of online language curricula and the application of new computer-based technologies to language teaching. The goal is to gather a collection of innovative, unpublished research that highlights current research on the topic, and can be one of the key references in the field for years to come. The editors are particularly interested in scholarship that makes clear connections between empirical research in the cyber or hybrid classroom and larger philosophical issues in language teaching and learning with clear implications for future directions in the field. Topics: Contributions may focus on language learning in higher education, the K-12 curriculum or alternative non-academic environments (cf. below), and may either deal exclusively with online learning or compare online and non-online environments. Abstracts Due December 1st, 2013 View the full call for papers at http://linguistlist.org/issues/24/24-3263.html
