Title: Babylonian and Assyrian Poetry and Literature Read Aloud
Body: From http://www.soas.ac.uk/baplar This website collects recordings of modern Assyriologists reading ancient Babylonian and Assyrian poetry and literature aloud in the original language. It is intended to serve several purposes, some for Assyriologists, and some for the wider public. First, it aims to foster interest among students of Babylonia and Assyria in how these civilizations’ works of verbal art were read aloud in the past, and how they should be read aloud today. Second, it provides a forum in which scholars who have theories about Babylonian and Assyrian pronunciation, meter, etc. can present a concrete example of how their theories sound in practice. Third, as a record of the ways in which contemporary scholars read Babylonian and Assyrian, it will some day serve a historical function. Finally, but not least, the questions which students of ancient languages most frequently hear from laymen are: "How did they sound? And how do you know?" This website is meant to serve as an introduction to these issues, providing the public with some idea of how modern Assyriologists think Babylonian and Assyrian were pronounced. Access the website at http://www.soas.ac.uk/baplar

Title: Latin in Modern Media
Body: From http://www.economist.com/news/international/21582287-dead-language-alive-and-kicking-online-and-airwaves-resurrexit-vere Resurrexit vere A dead language is alive and kicking online and on the airwaves July 27, 2013 WHEN Pope Benedict XVI resigned in February he used Latin, giving a scoop to Giovanna Chirri, the only journalist present who understood his words. That was a timely reminder of Latin’s unlikely survival—and revival—as a living language. Radio Bremen, a German station, has broadcast a weekly news roundup called Nuntii Latini Septimanales since 2001. Finland’s YLE Radio 1 has run a similar show since 1989, with listeners in over 80 countries. Twitter’s 140-character epigraphs and aphorisms are ideal for Latin: five words can often say more than ten English ones, notes David Butterfield, a Latinist at the University of Cambridge. Like Google, Facebook offers users a Latin-language setting, replete with “Mihi placet” for “like” and “Quid in animo tuo est?” for “What’s on your mind?” Farther up the slopes of Parnassus is Schola, a Latin-only social-networking site created in 2008; Ephemeris, an online Latin newspaper started by a Polish journalist in 2004, has contributors in Colombia, Germany, Chile and America. Title: A Look at ELL Performance So Far on Common-Core-Aligned Tests
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/learning-the-language/2013/08/ell_performance_sinks_on_commo.html A Look at ELL Performance So Far on Common-Core-Aligned Tests By Lesli A. Maxwell August 9, 2013 Student performance on New York's new common-core-aligned tests was weak across the board, as results released earlier this week confirmed the low expectations that education officials in that state had been steeling the public for over the last several months. Statewide, the proficiency rates in English/language arts sank from 55.1 percent on the non-common-core-aligned exams from the 2011-12 school year, to 31.1 percent on the common-core-aligned tests given this past spring. In math, the proficiency rates fell from 64.8 percent to 31 percent. Because of their lack of fluency, of course, English-learners' proficiency rates are always considerably lower than their peers who are native speakers of the language. But do the very low ELL scores on the new common-core-aligned tests provide any early-stage insight into how well teachers, who must change their practice considerably to teach the common standards, are being additionally prepared to support their non-English-proficient students?
