Title: Article: Language Learning in the Age of the Common Core
Body: From http://asiasociety.org/education/chinese-language-initiatives/language-learning-age-common-core Language Learning in the Age of the Common Core By Heather Clydesdale In evolutionary terms, it’s called a catastrophism: a sudden event forces species to adapt quickly and dramatically. Since their introduction in 2010, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have been adopted by 45 U.S. states, reshaping the American educational ecosystem. As schools and districts scramble to adjust, it’s not surprising that teachers of Chinese, and avid watchers of their programs, often perceive CCSS as a threat. Some language classes are endangered as administrators hunt for more time for reading and math, and teachers may suddenly find themselves adapting to new habitats, such as assisting with math and reading intervention. Yet Yan Wang, a teacher at Dixie Magnet Elementary School in Kentucky’s Fayette County Public Schools, insists that CCSS is an opportunity for teachers to root even nascent programs more deeply in their schools, and to demonstrate that they, and their Chinese language program, are important assets in the Common Core endeavor. Title: Need for Interpreters Grows with Immigration
Body: From http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2013/08/03/need-for-interpreters-grows-with-immigration.html Need for interpreters grows with immigration By Oliver Ortega August 3, 2013 About a decade ago, Elena Tsinman’s agency began getting requests for interpreters who could speak Oromo, Tigrinya and Agaw — all east African languages she had never heard of. Since then, her Columbus-based company, ASIST, has expanded to offer more than 240 languages on a 24-hour hot line and 150 on-site interpreters, covering widely used languages as well as the most arcane. As Columbus’ immigrant population has grown, local nonprofit groups and agencies such as ASIST have been crucial in helping the city’s foreign-born residents obtain services and assimilate. Recent immigration from all over Asia, Africa and Latin America has created a need for interpretation and translation in scores of languages for law enforcement, courts, hospitals and social-service agencies. Title: Miami High School Offers Dual Language Program in Haitian Creole
Body: From http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/08/05/3543664/edison-high-offers-dual-language.html Edison High offers dual-language program in English, Creole by Patricia Mazzei August 5, 2013 The teachers at Miami Edison Senior High School had a challenge on their hands. Students recently arrived from Haiti and fluent in Haitian Creole were having trouble with assignments and exams — not because they didn’t grasp the material, but because they were still learning English. So Pablo Ortiz, Edison’s former top administrator, came up with a plan: Let the students speak in Creole. A dual-language program was born. Unlike foreign-language programs in other schools, where students fluent in English learn Mandarin Chinese or Portuguese to pick up a second language, Edison’s Creole experiment grew out of necessity. It is directed at selected students who might fall behind if they take classes only in English — but who may thrive if they’re given the chance to express what they know in their native language. Administrators have seen such an improvement in students in the program that they have decided to expand it to include incoming 9th graders. The rising 10th graders who participated last year will remain as a group and take classes together.
