Title: Book: Revitalising Indigenous Languages
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847698872 Revitalising Indigenous Languages: How to Recreate a Lost Generation By Marja-Liisa Olthuis, Suvi Kivelä, and Tove Skutnabb-Kangas Published by Multilingual Matters Summary: The book tells the story of the Indigenous Aanaar Saami language (around 350 speakers) and cultural revitalization in Finland. It offers a new language revitalization method that can be used with Indigenous and minority languages, especially in cases where the native language has been lost among people of a working age. The book gives practical examples as well as a theoretical frame of reference for how to plan, organize and implement an intensive language program for adults who already have professional training. It is the first time that a process of revitalization of a very small language has been systematically described from the beginning; it is a small-scale success story. The book finishes with self-reflection and cautious recommendations for Indigenous peoples and minorities who want to revive or revitalize their languages. Title: Book: Phonological Awareness and Reading Acquisition
Body: From http://www.lincom-shop.eu/shop/article_ISBN%25209783862884162/LSSLT-19%3A-Phonological-Awareness-and-Reading-Acquisition.html LSSLT 19: Phonological Awareness and Reading Acquisition An Educational Proposal for Introducing English in Italian Preschools By Verusca Costenaro Published by Lincom Academic Publishers Description: Phonological awareness (PA) refers to children’s ability to distinguish or manipulate the auditory segments of any spoken language. The present work investigates PA skills in preschool children in relation to the successive development of children’s reading/writing abilities in an L1 and an L2. The first chapter explores the methodological issues that are still unsolved or neglected in the field of early foreign language teaching methodology in Italy. What follows is a description of PA skills and development in English-speaking children, and the of PA role within children’s process of L1 literacy acquisition. The next section describes the most relevant evidence-based studies supporting the role of PA as an emergent literacy skill in preschool children, and as a predictor of literacy acquisition. In order to verify whether PA skills can be transferred from an L1 to an L2, the author successively examines the development of PA in children acquiring a language other than English as their L1, or English as a second language, and the phenomenon of transfer of PA skills across English/other alphabetic or non-alphabetic languages. The following chapters tackle methodological issues and describe the general educational environment where PA tasks in English as an L2 could be carried out in Italian preschools, as well as the main features of these activities. Lastly, a set of innovative teaching/learning tasks are presented. These tasks have been designed by the author, with the purpose of assisting Italian educators in developing preschool children’ PA skills, as well as their overall oral skills in English as an L2. Title: Apples –Journal of Applied Language Studies: 2012 Issues Online
Body: Apples: Journal of Applied Language Studies is a peer-reviewed, open access scientific journal in the field of applied language studies. The full volume of 2012 is now online. The first issue includes four articles that deal with language education and language teaching in different contexts. Jörgen Tholin problematizes equality of language education within the so called SvEn education, where goal setting is lacking and activities unregulated and varied. The other articles discuss the importance of role models in international higher education, a European survey on teaching English pronunciation, and the role of grammar knowledge in the Common European Framework of Reference. In addition, the issue includes a book review of a volume on multilingualism, edited by Cecilia Varcasia. The second issue of 2012 includes eight articles that are based on papers given at the international conference New Dynamics of Language Learning: Spaces and Places – Intentions and Opportunities. The articles discuss language learning from several angles: learner identities and beliefs, language learning in different settings, and various ways of learning and teaching languages. The issue includes several articles on university students’ language learning and teaching and their beliefs about language learning. Additionally, methods of planning teaching and motivating students are covered. The articles also discuss reviving lapsed language skills and learning languages in informal contexts. As research data, the studies reported in the articles have used narratives, questionnaires, teaching experiment and ethnography. Apples publishes articles that share an applied, interdisciplinary orientation to issues of language in society. Its key areas of interest include language learning, language teaching, language assessment and language education policy. The working language of the journal is English but papers and other contributions can also be published in other languages. Apples is published by the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Apples is an open access web-based journal, with all its articles accessible online.
