Title: English-Language Learners at Center of Dispute in Denver
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/learning-the-language/2013/02/english-language_learners_at_c.html English-Language Learners at Center of Dispute in Denver By Lesli A. Maxwell February 1, 2013 Revisions to a federal consent decree have put Denver's English-language learners in the middle of a political tussle between the district's superintendent and three school board members. Last week, Superintendent Tom Boasberg went before a federal judge expecting to win approval for changes to a consent decree connected to a nearly 40-year-old desegregation case. The updates to Denver's consent decree center on significant changes that the school district is making to its programs for English-language learners, who make up more than one-third of the 82,000-student system. Changes to Denver's ELL programs have been taking shape for a couple of years in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice and a civil rights group that was one of the original plaintiffs in the desegregation lawsuit. But three members of the school board—two of whom are Latino and bilingual—sent a letter to the judge just before the hearing raising numerous concerns about the modifications. Among other things, they contend that programs for beginning English-learners are not being provided in charter schools and some district-run schools, and that too many teachers experienced at working with ELLs have been replaced with inexperienced Teach For America recruits. Title: ELL Teachers Connect and Learn in Twitter Chats
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/learning-the-language/2013/01/ell_teachers_connect_and_learn.html ELL Teachers Connect and Learn in Twitter Chats By Lesli A. Maxwell January 28, 2013 Every Monday night on Twitter, teachers who work with English-language learners connect with one another to engage in hour-long discussions and debates that unfold in 140-character tweets. At 9 p.m. Eastern time, #ELLCHAT, co-hosted by two education consultants who specialize in working with ELL teachers, kicks off with the topic du jour. Those topics range from the practical: How to select a complex text for beginning English-learners, for example, to policy: Ways to advocates for ELLs on local, state, and national issues in 2013. The weekly chats might draw in dozens of tweeting participants, while countless others "lurk" by reading and retweeting. But over the course of the week, using the #ELLCHAT hashtag, many hundreds of questions, answers, resources, and other tidbits are swapped and shared, say Judie Haynes (@judiehaynes), a co-host who helped start the chat, and Karen Nemeth (@KarenNamethEdM), also a co-host. Title: Bilingual Vocabulary Quizzes at Activities for ESL
Body: We reported on the Activities for ESL Students website in a previous InterCom article (http://casls.uoregon.edu/intercom/site/view-article.php?ArticleID=7264 ), but we didn’t mention the potential usefulness of the site for teachers of languages other than English. There is an extensive collection of bilingual quizzes in a wide variety of languages; although intended for English language learners they can also be used to practice vocabulary in the other language. The bilingual quizzes are organized by language on the right side of the project home page: http://a4esl.org

Title: Book: Researching Cultures of Learning
Body: From http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=510458 Researching Cultures of Learning: International Perspectives on Language Learning and Education Edited by Martin Cortazzi and Lixian Jin Published by Palgrave Macmillan Description: This edited book is the first collection of research-based papers on cultures of learning, a concept which has been developed by the editors over 20 years. It assembles research with a considerable international range with a team of experts (working in USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Finland, France, Iran, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Thailand) with deep experience of the wide range of cultural contexts which are investigated, many related to 'home contexts' of the authors themselves. The book includes a diversity of case studies of particular situations of language learning and use; it offers explorations of transcultural learning by students and teachers who cross languages and borders for study or work. All authors have long engagement with the cultural participants about whom they are writing. This book thus includes a range of orientations, viewpoints and critical stances on cultures of learning and prospective authors have been invited for their expertise, experience and insights in cultural contexts of learning in different countries. Title: Book: Integrating Computer-Mediated Communication into Foreign Language Education
Body: From http://www.lincom-shop.eu/shop/article_ISBN%25209783862884100/LSSLT-18%3A-Integrating-Computer-Mediated-Communication-into-Foreign-Language-Education.html LSSLT 18: Integrating Computer-Mediated Communication into Foreign Language Education A Vietnamese Sociocultural Context of Higher Education By Long V. Nguyen Published by Lincom Academic Publishers Description: The book investigates the nature of both synchronous and asynchronous computer-mediated communication and how these two modes of communication may complement each other and contribute to collaborative learning in an EFL classroom environment. Results from the research indicated promising avenues for the application of various CMC technologies in the Confucius heritage language classroom. The quality of discussion was persuasively better in the online synchronous mode. The use of wikis as a new platform for peer exchanges can be considered an innovation, liberating the students from the conventional, narrow, and linear practice of pen-and-paperbased peer editing. Furthermore, indications of trends in terms of quality were positive toward the online essays. Learners’ reflections on and perceptions of the introduction of CMC into language learning presented a potential picture of a technology-enhanced classroom. This book is therefore aimed at researchers, language teachers, and graduate students with an interest in computer-mediated communication and computer-assisted language learning.
