We are 45 minutes from the mountains (skiing), 1 1/2 hours to Los Angeles and the beach, and 2 1/2 hours to Las Vegas. My principal is very supportive of our language program and our cultural exchange program with a school in Mexico. Our school just received a six year WASC accreditation. Title: Bridging the Gap: A Communities of Color Mental Health Forum
Body: Bridging the Gap: A Communities of Color Mental Health Forum Presented by Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) in partnership with the National Black Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, May 21, 2003 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Court Yard Marriott Hotel 31910 Gate Way Center Blvd. S Federal Way, WA Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) is partnering with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the National Black Chamber of Commerce, along with African American Mental Health Professionals, National Association of Black Veterans and other organizations in communities of color, including the Latino and Native American communities, to present "Bridging the Gap: A Communities of Color Mental Health Forum." The forum will address critical mental health issues affecting communities of color. It will be held on May 21, 8:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m., at the Court Yard Marriott Hotel, 31910 Gate Way Center Blvd. S., in Federal Way. Diane Narasaki, ACRS Executive Director, said the forum will be a good opportunity to learn about the issues and what we can do about them. "Due to environmental factors, people of color in this country, including Asian Pacific Americans, are at higher risk for mental illness than the mainstream population. For instance, elderly Asian American women have the highest suicide rate of women in the nation, and young Asian American women have the second highest suicide rate. Our communities require culturally competent care to address the needs, and this forum will discuss both the needs and cultural competency." Narasaki said that there is a crisis in mental health funding at the state and local levels, which endangers quality of care in our communities. The forum will provide an opportunity to learn more about the situation and what can be done about it. Eddie Rye, conference organizer, said the forum is being held in Federal Way in recognition of the sizeable and growing communities of color in south King County. For more information, please contact Diane Narasaki at 206 695-7600 or Eddie Rye at 206 786-2763.
