Title: Linguistics Institute for Language Teachers
Body: From http://linguistics.osu.edu/newsEvents/lilt/yr2011/default Linguistics Institute for Language Teachers at The Ohio State University June 20-24, 2011 LILT is a weeklong summer program offered by the OSU Department of Linguistics and the School and Teaching and Learning designed specifically for teachers of foreign languages. The goal is to provide language teachers with greater linguistic awareness and understanding, with the ability to think critically about language, and with a deeper appreciation for all aspects of language and language study. The program is not a general introduction to language, nor is it an introduction to linguistics, nor is it about second language pedagogy. Rather, the philosophy behind the program is that language teachers and learners can be well served by knowledge that offers them insight into the structure and use of their own language, so that they will be able to see more clearly how the language that they are teaching or learning differs from it and be able to profit from this understanding. In short, the objective is to provide the teacher/learner with what s/he needs to know about language in general in order to study a particular language more effectively. Title: Article: Bilingualism May Delay Alzheimer’s
Body: From http://www.world-science.net/othernews/101112_alzheimers.htm Speaking two or more languages may help delay Alzheimer’s disease symptoms by as much as five years, research has found. A new study examined medical records of 211 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer’s, a devastating memory-erasing disorder estimated to affect one in eight people 65 years of age or older in the United States alone. The researchers found that symptoms started as much as five years later for people who had spoken two or more languages consistently over many years. The study led by scientists at Baycrest, an academic center affiliated with the University of Toronto, is published in the Nov. 9 issue of the journal Neurology. The brains of people who speak two languages still show deterioration from Alzheimer’s pathology, the researchers noted. But their extra language abilities seem to equip them with compensatory skills to hold back the tell-tale symptoms, such as memory loss, confusion, and difficulties with problem-solving and planning. Title: The Language of Basket Making in Abenaki
Body: From http://www.indiancountrytoday.com/living/education/Language-keepers-106978428.html Language keepers By Donna Laurent Caruso November 15, 2010 “L8dwaw8gan wji Abaznodakaw8gan” (The Language of Basket Making) is a newly available book (November 2010, Bowman Books, New York) by Jesse Bruchac with Elie Joubert and Jeanne Brink that presents a unique way to continue the revitalization of the Abenaki language. Bruchac writes in the preface that this is “the first attempt at creating a ‘how-to’ manual within the Abenaki language.” Western Abenaki is translated into colloquial English in a series of steps with clear black and white photographs showing the process – and thus revealing the culture – of wood splint ash basket making in the Wabanaki culture.
