Title: Japanese Enrollments Increase
Body: The Modern Language Association (MLA) on December 8 released the results of its most recent survey of enrollments in foreign language classes on American college and university campuses. This survey, which is conducted every three years, was conducted in Fall 2009. The total Japanese-language enrollments of 73,434 represented an increase of 10.3% over the total numbers in 2006 (which in turn had increased more than 25% over 2003). The complete results and a summary of the survey can be viewed online at http://www.mla.org/2009_enrollmentsurvey . The results of two other recent enrollment surveys also show very healthy increases in K-12 enrollments in the United States: one survey was conducted in 2009 by the Japan Foundation (http://www.jpf.go.jp/e/japanese/survey/result/index.html ), which collects data for all countries and all levels of Japanese education outside Japan; the other survey was conducted in 2007-08 by ACTFL, which collected data on K-12 foreign language enrollments in U.S. public schools only. The ACTFL survey data, which showed an increase in Japanese language enrollments of 17.5% over the totals for 2004-05, will be released in the next few days. Please look for more details on all the survey data for Japanese on the Association of Teachers of Japanese website soon, and in the next issue of the ATJ Newsletter. Title: Article Features Father Reginald Foster
Body: From http://www.fox6now.com/news/witi-112210-king-of-latin,0,1561237.story Vatican relies on Milwaukee man for his expertise in Latin Fr. Reginald Foster reads, writes Latin documents for Vatican by Mike Lowe November 22, 2010 Father Reginald Foster is trying to resuscitate something most people consider dead; the old language of Latin. Years ago, Foster spurned the family business for a higher calling. He joined the priesthood. Foster soon learned he excelled at one of the tools of the trade. He spoke Latin like a Roman emperor. That talent was noticed and needed at the Vatican where Latin remains the official language. For the next 40 years, every official document that came from the Vatican was either written by Foster's hand or approved with his eyes. That includes the funeral mass of Pope John Paul II, the mass heralding the ascention of Pope Benedict, even the document certifying Jerome Listecki as Milwaukee's Archbishop. Title: French in Action Reunion
Body: In late October, Yale University hosted a gathering of French in Action (http://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html ) users and fans to honor its developer Pierre Capretz and the enormous success of the course for nearly 25 years. Teachers of all levels discussed how they’ve used the course and, to the delight of attendees, the two stars of the video story, Valérie Allain (Mireille) and Charles Mayor (Robert) attended the event and reminisced about the filming of French in Action. As the blogger from the FiA Fans site said, “The world has never been the same for those of us who fell under its spell.” For photos and highlights of the event go to http://fiareunion.wordpress.com and check back for updates. You can also see many photos from the event at the fan Web site for French in Action. http://www.fiafans.org Annenberg Media Update December 2010 (info@learner.org, 30 Nov 2010).
