Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/11/world/europe/11germany.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1&th&emc=th German Identity, Long Dormant, Reasserts Itself By NICHOLAS KULISH September 10, 2010 German pride did not die after the country’s defeat in World War II. Instead, like Sleeping Beauty in the Brothers Grimm version of the folk tale, it only fell into a deep slumber. The country has now awakened, ready to celebrate its economic ingenuity, its cultural treasures and the unsullied stretches of its history. As Germany embarks on this journey of self-discovery, the question is whether it will leave behind a European project which was built in no small measure on the nation’s postwar guilt and on its pocketbook. Title: Fresh French Shorts at NW Film Center
Body: From http://www.afportland.org October 29 and 30, 2010 - Fresh French Shorts at NW Film Center Co-presented by the Alliance, this is NW Film's third annual compilation of recent shorts by emerging French directors offers an eclectic selection of narrative, documentary, and animated international prizewinners. Cinema occupies an especially important place in French culture, with a tradition of major government support underwriting production, distribution, and exhibition both inside and outside the country. While established directors find funding for ambitious new feature films, significant investment also goes into short films by new, risk-taking talents that give voice to the diversity of French society and collectively offer both unique insight into French life and opportunity to the next generation of French filmmakers. Check NW Film's site at http://nwfilm.org/screenings/27/273/#1713 for details and tickets. Also consider attending a complimentary pre-film reception in the Andrée Stevens room on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Alliance and Le Happy, and consider taking in the Kings of Pastry documentary on October 30 and 31, sponsored by Saint Honoré Boulangerie.
