Title: Article: Reading Arabic 'Hard for Brain'
Body: From http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11181457 Reading Arabic 'hard for brain' By Katie Alcock September 10, 2010 The University of Haifa team say people use both sides of their brain when they begin reading a language - but when learning Arabic this is wasting effort. The detail of Arabic characters means students should use only the left side of their brain because that side is better at distinguishing detail. The findings from nearly 40 people are reported in Neuropsychology. Read the full article at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11181457

Title: Hmong Studies Consortium Launched
Body: From http://seasia.wisc.edu/News/news.htm With generous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, the UW-Madison Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Univ. of Minnesota Consortium for the Study of the Asias have established a Hmong Studies Consortium. The UW-UM Hmong Studies Consortium intends to establish a major collaborative program that will serve all of the United States – one that will develop faculty expertise, offer new courses, encourage and sponsor research, and systematically collect and preserve resources related to the study of the Hmong. Primary attention will be directed to the study of the Hmong in Southeast Asia, with a secondary interest in Hmong resettlement in the United States. The Univ. of Minnesota already has two tenure-track faculty members focusing on Hmong Studies and UW presently has none, so the Luce Foundation grant is providing seed money to establish a tenure-track faculty position in Hmong Studies at UW-Madison beginning Fall 2010. The Univ. of Minnesota is using money from the grant to fund a post-doctoral researcher. Both universities will be offering graduate assistantships in Hmong Studies in upcoming academic years. To find where you can get more information about the new consortium, go to http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=84226462733

Title: Article: Are American Friendships Superficial?
Body: From http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/looking-in-the-cultural-mirror/201009/are-american-friendships-superficial Are American Friendships Superficial? Why do many immigrants consider American friendships superficial? By Jefferson Fish September 7, 2010 I was speaking to a German woman who has lived in the United States for a decade and has made it her permanent home. She was describing her likes and dislikes about the U.S. in comparison to Germany. For example, on the positive side, she was enthusiastic about the opportunities for work and advancement she had found here based on her skills and accomplishments--as opposed to Germany where an insistence on the right credentials is often insurmountable. On the negative side, however, she complained that American friendships are superficial. She also described a misunderstanding with a co-worker, who referred to her as a friend. "You're not my friend," she said. "You're an acquaintance. We go out for coffee together and chat about things. That's not friendship." The woman was offended--not surprisingly. Telling someone in the U.S. "You're not my friend," is tantamount to saying "You're my enemy." It took quite a while for her to overcome this misstep. What is going on here?
