Our restful days of summer have rejuvenated us and we're ready to step into the fray, eager and anxious to share our love of language to the new crop of students awaiting us. But, what do we want to accomplish this year? Of course, we want our students to succeed, to develop an understanding of language and cultures, and to get through the curriculum our district has established for us. Is that all? Read the entire article at http://www.nclrc.org/teachers_corner/classroom_solutions_yana/current_entry.html Edited by Sheila Cockey. YANA stands for 'You are Not Alone.' Your questions on challenges in your classrooms are answered by an expert on languages and culture teaching. Title: Book: Cognitive Bases of Second Language Fluency
Body: From http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780805856613 Cognitive Bases of Second Language Fluency By Norman Segalowitz Published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group Summary: Exploring fluency from multiple vantage points that together constitute a cognitive science perspective, this book examines research in second language acquisition and bilingualism that points to promising avenues for understanding and promoting second language fluency. Cognitive Bases of Second Language Fluency covers essential topics such as units of analysis for measuring fluency, the relation of second language fluency to general cognitive fluidity, social and motivational contributors to fluency, and neural correlates of fluency. The author provides clear and accessible summaries of foundational empirical work on speech production, automaticity, lexical access, and other issues of relevance to second language acquisition theory. Cognitive Bases of Second Language Fluency is a valuable reference for scholars in SLA, cognitive psychology, and language teaching, and it can also serve as an ideal textbook for advanced courses in these fields. Title: Book: A Tale of Two Schools
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847693099 A Tale of Two Schools: Developing Sustainable Early Foreign Language Programs Authors: Richard Donato and G.Richard Tucker Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: This volume documents a sixteen-year longitudinal study of two elementary schools in which Spanish and Japanese foreign language programs were implemented and evaluated. Evaluation of the programs involved documenting children's language development, assessing the attitudes of various constituents, and examining critical issues related to the introduction and successful operation of a well articulated sequential foreign language program in schools. The volume concludes with a discussion of possible reasons why over time certain sequential foreign language programs flourish and grow while other programs are reduced or eliminated from the school's curriculum. Parallels with the theory and practice of environmental sustainable development are used as a framework for this analysis. Title: Call for Papers and Panels: Texas Asia Conference
Body: Graduate Student Conference Friday, February 11 & Saturday, February 12, 2011 University of Texas at Austin The *Texas Asia Conference* at the University of Texas at Austin invites students working on original research projects across disciplines and across traditional academic divisions of Asia to present their work. The conference will provide graduate students with a dynamic forum in which to present their research and benefit from a scholarly exchange of ideas. We welcome applications from graduate students in all academic disciplines engaged in research on South, Southeast, Central, and East Asia, and their communities in the diaspora. All areas of study are invited: anthropology, art history, communication, ethnomusicology, history, literature, philology, political science, religion, sociology, women’s studies, and other related fields. Work which crosses disciplinary, spatial, and temporal boundaries is encouraged. In addition to an exciting range of panel presentations and a lecture from two keynote speakers, a more casual program of receptions will provide ample time for less structured discussion and exchange, something essential to bringing together the wider community of students and professors. In the past, selected papers delivered at the conference were published in the South Asia Graduate Research Journal (SAGAR). We aim to publish selected papers again this year. Submission Deadlines for Abstracts: Friday, October 15, 2010. Submissions must be made to the Planning Committee via email or post-marked no later than October 15th. Electronic submissions must include the text in the body of the message. Abstracts should be limited to 300 words. Please submit the abstract with personal information, paper title, the author’s name, affiliation, panel title (if applicable), address, telephone number, and email address, on a separate page. Presenters are encouraged to form 3- or 4-person panels. Groups submitting panels should send individual abstracts, plus a brief panel abstract, via the same email or envelope and include the panel title. Panels should be linked by theme. Final papers must not exceed 3000 words, as the maximum reading time is 20 minutes. The Planning Committee reserves the right to accept, reject, or restructure any paper and panel submissions. Please send abstracts and panel suggestions, as well as any inquiries to: texasasiaconference@gmail.com OR Planning Committee, Asian Studies Graduate Conference, The University of Texas at Austin Asian Studies, WCH 4.134 (G9300), Austin, TX 78712.
