TitleNew in the NAEP Data Explorer: National Indian Education Study Data
Body
Data from the 2005 and 2007 National Indian Education Study (NIES) have now been added to the NAEP Data Explorer (NDE). Data for the 2009 NIES will be available when the 2009 report is released this summer.

The NIES is a two-part study designed to describe the condition of education for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in the United States.

* Part I covers NAEP assessment results that provide in-depth information on the mathematics and reading performance of 4th- and 8th-grade AI/AN students. These data are presented either as overall totals or in the context of information from the NAEP student, teacher, and school questionnaires that are given to all participants in NAEP.

* Part II presents results from the NIES Survey that provides information on AI/AN students' experience with their culture and language related to education. These data are collected with separate survey questionnaires for students, their teachers, and their school administrators. The NIES Survey is administered to all AI/AN students who participated in NAEP reading and mathematics assessments at grades 4 and 8. The survey is administered after the assessment.

The NIES NDE works just like the NDE tools for the main NAEP and long-term trend datasets. A tutorial and Quick Reference Guide for the NDE can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/naepdata

NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics within the Institute of Education Sciences. NIES is conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics as a special study of NAEP.
