Title: TPRS Teachers Needed-French and German
Body: From: "George and Jena Williams" We are losing two great teachers and want to find TPRS teachers to replace them. The French program has had a terrific TPRS teacher who has built the program to full time. The district wants to see it continue to grow with the idea of adding fourth year AP. The German position is part time so another certification area will be necessary. This has not been a TPRS program, but the administration is very pleased with our TPRS results and would be happy to see it go that way. Because there is only one French and German teacher, they will have great freedom to design their programs. The adminstration and foreign language department is very supportive-even if I do say so myself. We have a lot of fun working together and growing from each other's ideas. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language.” (National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, 1999, p. 7) Much attention has been focused on the importance of early foreign language learning. Some research reports that younger children have a greater chance of gaining native-like proficiency in a language than older children or adults. Body: From: "LLTI-Editor" This is to bring to your attention the advertisement, which has been placed on the MLA Job Information List (online) and on Berkeley's Web Site: Lecturer [1939] Pending budgetary approval, the Department of French at UC Berkeley seeks to hire a full-time Lecturer in French language and pedagogy. Duties will include coordination of our 2nd-year French language courses, assistance in the supervision of graduate teaching assistants, and teaching assignments that will include undergraduate language instruction and graduate pedagogy seminars. Initial appointment, which would begin July 1, 2004, is for one year and may be renewed on a one-year basis. We seek candidates with superior pedagogical qualifications, expertise in the creation of instructional materials, prior experience in supervising teaching assistants, and a commitment to teaching French language, literature, and culture at all levels. Experience and strong interest in developing and using technology for language teaching is preferred. Superior level of spoken and written French required. Ph. D. in hand preferred. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. As a reward for your participation in the pilot and answering a short survey at the end of the pilot, we would like to provide you with a free 2004/2005 academic year subscription to ClassPak, Language Learning Solution's online proficiency-based instruction and assessment tool. http://www.onlinells.com/onlinells/products/classpak/ We hope STAMP 2 will contribute to the field by making proficiency assessment easy and affordable. The first step is to verify the items to ensure that they are reliable and valid. We welcome you to review STAMP 2 and consider giving the test to your students as a part of our pilot. The pilot will continue till the end of FEBURUARY. TO TAKE A LOOK AT STAMP 2: 1. From your Internet browser, go to http://www.languageassessment.net 2. Log in using user name: pilotv4-test and password: 3210 IMPORTANT NOTE: - This user name is *NOT* FOR YOUR STUDENTS TO TAKE THE TEST. You need to contact us to get user names for your students. - This user name will give you access to items at Novice-high and Intermediate-low level only. If you encounter any technical problems, go to the Computer Compatibility Test Page at http://www.languageassessment.net/language/japanesecheck/ 3. To see test result page, log off and log back in using user name: pilotv4-teacher and password 7415 In addition to helping the field develop a better way to measure student performance, having your students participate in the pilot will help them understand what they have to do to be proficient in Japanese. STAMP 2 is innovative both pedagogically and technically. Real-life tasks assess interpretive and presentational modes in the national standards. The interpretive section (listening and reading) is computer adaptive and its results become available immediately after test. Presentational mode (speaking and writing) sections are graded by human graders. The test uses streaming video and technology to record and deliver sound files over the Internet. To take the test, students just need a recent browser and Quicktime, both of which are installed many of computers or can be downloaded for free.
