Title: Reading in a Foreign Language
Body: From: OELA Newsline In the October 2003 issue of Reading in a Foreign Language, Ratnawati Mohd Asraf and Ismail Sheikh Ahmad report their findings on an extensive reading program used in three rural Malaysian secondary schools. The extensive reading program was used to help students overcome challenges they faced when comprehending English text in order to increase their English proficiency. The study concluded that the extensive reading program resulted in positive attitudes towards reading in English, however, did not directly support an increase in English proficiency. Asraf and Ahmad suggest "that longitudinal studies be carried out to determine the effect of extensive reading on students' language proficiency." The researchers believe that if the extensive reading program is maintained, the improvement in students' attitudes towards reading English and the increased motivation to read books in English will improve their English proficiency over time. Title: Using Literature in the Secondary Content Classroom
Body: From: OELA Newsline When planning instruction of ESL students, teachers must understand the basic issues about language acquisition. To assist teachers with understanding these issues, the International Reading Association has provided chapter 7 of Judy S. Richardson’s “Read it Aloud--Using Literature in the Secondary Content Classroom” available on its web site. This chapter discusses how teachers can use literature to assist ESL students with learning English. One method is using characters from selected literature that are learning a second language as models for the students in the classroom. Richardson provides excerpts for reading aloud from various pieces of literature. She also provides instructional activities to use with these excerpts when teaching secondary level ESL students. Richardson discusses how to use literature to discuss ESL issues with students as well as providing ESL students with opportunities to practice using the English language.
